SoftICE, and an analysis of the vulnerability could have been written up within another 30 minutes.
SoftICE within a year or two – I don't believe this will be the case.
SoftICE certain areas of research will become more difficult and time-consuming, and consequently they may suffer as they will only receive attention if companies have the interest, time and/or money to dedicate to them.

 Softice For Newbies
If your reading this then you've just downloaded Softice and want to know what to do next, then in which case, reading these hints and tips on configuring Softice might be useful to you.
Next, in order for Softice to be configured to your tastes and needs we can configure Softice through a special file called Winice.DAT, which lives in the same directory as Softice itself.
Don't expect to be able to 'use' Softice straight away, you won't, however, after plenty of practice and getting to know how to 'read' the information Softice gives you will change all of that.

CodeGuru: Getting Started with SoftICE   (Site not responding. Last check: )
SoftICE is a kernel debugger that sits in between the operating system and the CPU so when SoftICE is active, the entire operating system stops dead.
Because SoftICE is so low level and has to have such intimate knowledge of the operating system, it's not uncommon for SoftICE to break between operating system service pack levels.
SoftICE is the only debugger capable of debugging user mode programs and stopping on any access to a particular piece of memory.

5.) installing softice studio is all about indexing one thing with another, im one of the few people who can even get the mouse working properly and that seems a simple feature, but i happen to love it
most of the problems i always had with softice was configuration of winice.dat and drivers settings having to do with screen modes or interupts.

 SoftICE - the very 'basics'.
SoftICE does now (version 4) support a pretty extensive list of display adapters and if your lucky the installation program will select an appropriate adapter to test.
If you possess the SDK for your OS as I do, you can use SoftICE's loader to translate the SDK's.DBg files into corresponding.nms files, which can then be loaded by SoftICE (if you wan't these files then e-mail me and I might be persuaded to give them to you).
Indeed there is, you can use a number of 'dumping tools', those such as ADump and SoftDump are less SoftICE intrusive and use memory mapped files (you move your desired dump into a committed area of memory), I however recommend IceDump which extends the functionality of your pagein command.

 SoftICE
SoftICE runs on the computer that you are debugging, which makes it extremely responsive when scanning memory or capturing large amounts of debug output, and it doesn't suffer some of WinDbg's limitations.
SoftICE's relatively high price tag, especially when you compare it to the cost of WinDbg (free), might make it a hard purchase to justify.
SoftICE will continue to be the coauthor of my NT Internals column, helping me to understand NT beyond its documentation.

Softice and DT v4.00 (4.01) - THE DAEMONS HOME
Will SoftIce still work if I disable DT, or remove it?
As far as consequences, probably will detect SoftIce running and either not allow itself to be loaded (to prevent debugging) or prevent SoftICE from loading while it is running.
I am just going on a limb here to answer, so someone from the dev team ect..

SecuriTeam™ - Compuware SoftICE Local DoS (DbgMsg Driver)
Compuware's SoftICE is "a powerful system-wide debugger that supports source level debugging of any software, driver, service, and most BIOS code on either a single or dual machine configuration".
However the driver doesn't validate the Debug Message pointer properly, this can cause an machine to crash when the pointer is invalid.
This attack can be also used as a very nasty anti-debugging trick against SoftICE users.
