  Reviews:
Softsynth is an outstanding program, as much for its educational value as for its musical applications.
Although Softsynth creates samples, it is not a sample editor, an entirely different type of program that operates on previously recorded samples and is instrument specific, much the same as synthesizer patch editors.
Softsynth for the ST is an excellent adaptation of the hit Macintosh MIDI program.

Software synthesizers, also known as Softsynths are very simply, sound generators that uses a CPU's processing power to generate sounds, like its hardware counterpart, the keyboard synthesizer.
With a sequencing software, softsynths can be "virtually connected" to playback the multiple tracks of music parts of a MIDI file.
Moreover, with a MIDI keyboard connected to the PC running softsynths, it is possible to "play" the PC as if it were a musical instrument.

A softsynth can be dedicated to a particular synthesis method (additive, subtractive, FM, etc.), or it can be open-ended and modular.
A softsynth can be dedicated wholly to a single synthesis method, it can be a hybrid of two or more methods, or it can take a more open-ended modular design.
These environments certainly can be employed as softsynths, but their generality of purpose places them closer to Csound than to the softsynths reviewed here.

RMT vs. Softsynth - AtariAge Forums
I mean Softsynth is pretty useless for ingame-music since you can only display a few block-graphics lines or the quality will be bad.
Softsynth is Public Domain and if it´s not available on the net I may convert for emulators, but I don´t know if it will work on emulators.
SOFTSYNTH itself was a messed-up program (I mean its "interface") and I couldn't imagine how one can write such amazing song as WODOSPADEM...

 BERKLEE | Berklee Today
Regardless of their format, softsynths are available in a wide variety of implementations with quality and features ranging from very high end (pricey) to useful-but-limited (freeware).
These softsynths model the sound of a particular instrument as well as recreate its look and "feel." The Native Instruments LM7, for example, is a softsynth based on the legendary Yamaha DX7, the most famous of Yamaha's FM synthesizers.
Lastly, because the softsynth resides inside the computer, your options can be more limited for patching the synth's signal to other hardware devices in your studio for creative manipulation and experimentation.
