Financing Volunteer Free Software Projects   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
As free software has been commercialized, paid labor has taken up an increasingly important role in the free software world and many free software projects today are built as works for hire and are released by corporations.
For most free software practitioners, institutional independence also implies that there is less potential for one company or group to "corner" or enclose a market or to create a dependence on their company: a result that that users find attractive.
Projects raise funding through the goodwill generated by the work of the entire project and using that funding to pay a small subset of volunteers can be extremely divisive.

STSC CrossTalk - Why Big Software Projects Fail: The 12 Key Questions - MarĀ 2005   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The principal questions concern why large software projects are hard to manage, the kinds of management systems needed, and the actions required to implement such systems.
Software project failures are common, and the biggest projects fail most often.
Since large projects still do not succeed even with all of the project management improvements of the last several years, one begins to wonder if large-scale software projects are inherently unmanageable.

How To Outsource Software Development and Hire Freelance Programmers: Commentary, Tips, and Best Practices
No matter how uncomfortable managing a software project makes you, the reality is it has to be done, and it has to be done by you.
You have the final say about what the project is. Giving that job to the programmer is like letting the fox guard the hen house (no, I'm not saying that programmers are sly like foxes, many just need to be properly managed).
This is a huge problem, because the beginning stages of a software project are critical to its long term success.

Given the number of other checklists and tip sheets for project management, it is surprising how many project managers are not aware of them and do not apply lessons learned from previous projects, such as: "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail." One way to manage a difficult project is through timeboxing.

In these ways and others, many voluntary free software projects find themselves face to face with the reality that it is often easier for a successful volunteer free software project to get money than it is to spend it.
These include the tendancy of paid labor to crowd out volunteers, the negative impact of paid labor on the transparency of free software projects, and a general degradation in the quality of the software produced.
