The alpha build of the software is the first build delivered to the software testers.
When a beta becomes available to the general public it is often widely used by the technologically savvy and those familiar with previous versions as though it were the finished product.
It noted that Gmail and Google News, for example, had been in beta for a long period of time and were not expected to drop the beta status despite the fact that they were widely used; however, Google News did leave beta in January 2006.

Beta software testing is second due to the extensive testing and dogfooding that was done by the software company on the software to stabilize it prior to the release of the beta software to the beta testing program.
Beta software however shouldn't be used in production environments unless specifically stated by the software company that it can because beta software may not have all of the features implemented fully or implemented to where they properly work in each situation that may be available in the released version of the software.
Beta software testing sessions are tracked by number with the first normally being called Beta1 or B1 and the second named Beta2, third named Beta3, etc. The number of beta testing sessions depends upon the software company and within it the group holding the beta software testing session.

I also could tell stories of people using "released" software and failing, which would suggest we should be using beta software over released software.
Deploying a beta to a web server under your control is a hell of a lot easier than deploying the beta of the framework to a client’s machine, and then has to come along and update the framework when the release version comes out.
And while MS have said that the current release of the framework should be forwards compatible (using the framework team's definition of forward/backwards compatibility), there is a chance that a future release of the framework may break your app.

Historically, the only difference between pre-release and post-release bugs in software was that in the latter case, we parted with our money to have the privilege of getting support for them.
But no vendor ever guaranteed their software to be bug free and that users of it would never lose their work or their data (or worse, that we'd be satisfied with the outcome of support calls regarding bugs —; even calls that we paid extra for).
All software is buggy, but not all is beta.
