However, according to reports in the European media, Poland's Minister of Science and Information Technology, Wlodzimierz Marcinski made a special trip to Brussels to ask that the issue be dropped from the Fisheries Council's agenda.

Poland has once again thwarted the European Commission's plans to have the controversial draft Directive on the Patentability of Computer-Implemented Inventions (also known as the Software Patent Directive) rubber-stamped.
According to reports, the legislation was on the agenda to be voted through without discussion at Monday's meeting of the Council of Agriculture and Fisheries, until the Polish government requested its removal.
The situation is almost identical to that which occurred late last year (following Poland's withdrawal of its approval for the legislation), when the EC tried to sneak the matter onto the agenda of another Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting.

Software patent opponents are concerned that the limited scope to make changes means that restarting the whole process is the best way to prevent software falling under patent protection rules.

The Polish government, although it had a flying visit from an €nvoy to push it in the opposite direction, said it wouldn't support the directive.
After meetings with Sun, Novell, HP and Microsoft, the Polish government decided that the proposal in question was likely to make all software potentially patentable, which just won't do.
A number of countries including Luxembourg, Latvia, Denmark and Italy, as well as Poland, are now likely to submit amendments to the original idea.

Software patents have existed in the US for some time now, with disastrous results -- rather than encouraging innovation, these patents have been used by companies who produce nothing except lawsuits to shut down whole classes of technologies or to extort money from them.
The American experiment has been such a complete and utter failure, it's crystal-clear that software patents in Europe would be just as bad.
