She was the third daughter of Emperor Kimmei, and her mother was Soga no Iname's daughter, Soga no Kitashihime.
The Sogas prevailed and Prince Hatsusebe acceded to the throne as Emperor Sushun in 587.
For example, her refusal to grant Soga no Umako's request that he be granted the imperial territory known as Kazuraki no Agata in 624 is widely cited as evidence of her independence from his influence.

Emperor Yōmei was the fourth prince of Emperor Kimmei and his mother was Soga no Kitashihime, a daughter of Soga no Iname.
In 586, Emperor Yōmei took his half-sister Princess Hashihoto no Anahobe (穴穂部間人皇女, Hashihito no Anahobe no Himemiko), whose mother was another of Iname's daughters, as his consort.
The influential courtiers from Emperor Bidatsu's reign, Mononobe no Moriya and Soga no Umako, both remained in their positions during the reign of Emperor Yōmei.
