Sogo shosha are Japanese traders, existing at the center of Japan's global economic effort and serving as intermediaries for half of their country's exports and two-thirds of their imports.
This must be countered by the sogo shosha's ability to procure commodities and to find markets for smaller Japanese clients, for manufacturing subsidiaries in developing countries, and for large-scale resource development projects, which have also enhanced their bargaining power.
The sogo shosha have declined from internal weaknesses.

This the Sogo Shosha is either unable to do because it does not contain the necessary technical expertise or does not wish to do because of cost factors.
First the Sogo Shosha is usually a financially strong member of the zaibatsu and lends its financial strength to the manufacturer members by, among other actions, financing the sales of the manufacturer until collection has been made.
This factor combined with the fact that the Sogo Shosha has a great deal of political power is probably one of the principal reasons why there is reluctance on the part of Japan to open up its markets to foreign competition.

The environmental impact of a company's business activities is more difficult to evaluate when it is involved in many different industrial sectors, a problem which many sogo shosa cite as the main factor behind their relatively weak environmental reporting and disclosure policies.
The lack of shareholder activism, the complicated corporate structure of the sogo shosa, weak environmental NGOs, and relatively lax financial disclosure requirements mean that most Japanese companies are not required to, and often do not feel compelled to, release eco-efficiency information like the rate of recycling and energy intensity of production and services.

This paper is a preliminary inquiry into the changing pattern of Japanese food trade with the United States, focusing on the response of the sogo shosha, general trading companies, to diversification of food imports to Japan between 1982 and 1992.
In the post-WWII era, it is well established that sogo shosha have been the prime movers of foodstuffs to Japan from points around the world.
Since the early 1980s, however, unexpected changes have taken place in the sogo shosha role as trade agents: research indicates that despite increasing supply of foodstuffs to Japan, agricultural imports are of decreasing importance as an import category for the five largest Japanese trading companies.
