A National Historic Chemical Landmark: The Sohio Acrylonitrile Process
It was a conservative move, but it encouraged Sohio to view chemicals as a commercial enterprisea venture that would lead to remarkable success.
Sohio's process economics for acrylonitrile were so positive that the decision was made to proceed with commercialization even though early market development efforts were discouraging.

  Van Huff v. Sohio Alaska Petroleum Co. (6/26/92), 835 P 2d 1181
Sohio argued that these opinions were admissible evidence of the state of mind of the supervisors who rated Van Huff, and were therefore admissible under Alaska Rule of Evidence 803, paragraphs (3) and (23), the "state of mind exception" and "general exception" to the hearsay rule.
Sohio argues that Van Huff's assertions are irrelevant because the third-party statements were not hearsay, since those statements were not offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted.
To the extent that the pretrial ruling implied that Sohio was required to establish a foundation for the admission of the statements under Rule 803(3), that ruling was erroneous.

Sohio is probably the only major oil company whose primary brand name was limited to a single state.
A Sohio station was the first place I ever actively solicited maps, and if a person could be a fan of a brand, I was a Sohio fan in the 1960s.
"Sohio" itself is now part of history; the brand name gave way, to the passing lament of many Ohioans and others who follow oil company happenings, to that of its acquirer, BP.

After granting the Port's motion to join the PUC as an indispensable party (Code Civ.Proc., s 389), the court transferred the matter to this court (Code Civ.Proc., s 396) on the ground that it lacked authority to compel the PUC to comply with CEQA (Pub.Util.Code, s 1759; Pub.Res.Code, s 21168.6).

Because the Port was the first to act on the Sohio project, it became the lead agency and hence was required to defend the adequacy of the entire EIR under Public Resources Code section 21167; the PUC thereby became a "responsible" agency (Id., s 21069), whose actions are governed by section 21167.3.

Under the agreement, which became effective in 1970, SOHIO took over BP's leases at Prudhoe Bay and some East Coast downstream assets that BP had acquired in 1968.
After acquiring SOHIO outright, BP combined its existing interests in the United States with Standard's operations to form a new company: BP America.
