Soho Square was originally a place called Kemps Field, upon which Richard Frith built King's Square around 1677 (the gardens in the centre were laid out in 1681).
By the early 18th century everyone called it Soho Square due to Charles I's bastard son the Duke of Monmouth - who lived in King's Square - had a habit of bellowing "So-Ho" when hunting or going into battle.
Anyway, the first inhabitants were rather well to do (nothing new there then) but, by the beginning of the 19th century, most had left and the square was largely taken over by businesses - which is how it remains today.

Guardian Unlimited Football | News | Soho Square in leadership limbo as first choice splits
Peter Littlewood, an American-based English executive with Masterfoods, a subsidiary company of Mars, had been backed unanimously by the FA's six-man selection panel but was apparently unnerved at the last by the lack of unity towards his appointment among the 12-man executive board, some of whom instead favour another candidate, Mark Palios.
The FA's board must now decide whether to offer the job to Palios, aware as he is that he was not their unanimous first-choice candidate in the first place, or rethink their whole strategy from scratch.
Despite having the full backing of Thompson and the Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein, excellent business credentials and degrees in applied mathematics and economics, the 45-year-old Littlewood was still viewed as little more than another marketing man, and therefore a Crozier clone, by factions within the FA's executive board.
