Soilwork - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soilwork is a Swedish Melodic Death band formed in late 1995, originally under the name of Inferior Breed.
Their unique sound is a fusion of the classic Gothenburg metal sound with power-groove riffs of late 1970s, early 1980s British and European metal.
Of all the line-up changes with Soilwork, this one comes as the biggest and most disappointing to Soilwork fans, as Peter Wichers was a very important member of the band and has a style of guitar-playing that many believe cannot be duplicated.

Soilwork - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Soilwork's ascendence to prominence within the crowded Swedish melodic death metal scene has found them taking the gradual, but persistant approach to their development.
Although Soilwork sticks to some tried'n'true methods of twin guitar, melodic and slightly thrashy metal with the usual raspy shouts, there's a little extra spice to their music that has made this effort a major surprise.
The assault Soilwork unleashes is easily derived from the At the Gates school of death, with frantic, raging pacing and an abundance of unbridled energy that seems to be lacking in a lot of similar releases these days.

When Soilwork released Steelbath Suicide (Listenable Records) in 1998 (issued domestically in 2001 by Century Media), the immediacy and intensity of the music brought the band instant recognition from the European press, but the adulation came with the inevitable comparisons to some of their more well-known countrymen like In Flames, Arch Enemy and Dark Tranquillity.

In fact, Soilwork do sound so much like those aforementioned bands it's obvious where the influences are, but with ATG gone forever, Arch Enemy exploring new directions, and In Flames plagued with personnel changes, Steel Bath Suicide is a godsend for those of us who never expected another melodic masterpiece from the land of frost.
To my ears though, Soilwork manage to add their own signature, injecting a shot of speed and fury into one of my favorite brands of metal.
A couple changes in the Soilwork camp since the last album have also helped the band define more of a trademark, with things noticable improved in the drum department.

After ten years of hard work and five full-length albums (this is number six), Soilwork is one of the lucky bands who can make a living of their music.
The guitar riffs and solos are perfectly balanced, the production is top notch (a bit too polished at times but that's the way it is today), Speed displays some of the finest contrasting vocals ever and their French (originally from Belgium) session drummer Dirk Verbeuren (Scarve) works his drumkit with extraordinary skills.
While energetic was the best word to describe their music on the first couple of albums with I would say that powerful is a better suited and more descriptive word today.

Soilwork's riff structures are nothing like In Flames, and if the vocals are a ripoff (and its worth noting that all other Soilwork albums have mixed vocals), then In Flames by that logic, In Flames are just a Death ripoff anyway.
Soilwork is different from In Flames because it incorporates moments of actual singing, and great slightly high-pitched distorted wraith-like sections to the lyrics.
