  Yachigusa-Ryu Sojutsu
The spear has had a long and rich tradition in Japan, ranging from being part of the very myth of creation of the country, to supreme battlefield weapon of their civil wars, to a ceremonial symbol of ones rank, position, and government status.
Sojutsu is a complete martial art on its own, but will compliment any other form of martial training.
This is due to the fact it reinforces timing and distancing, increases strength and endurance, helps develop dexterity, and teaches body control.

 Sojutsu
Many schools of Sojutsu (the art of the spear) were formed throughout history, each teaching different methods of Yari fighting.
Sojutsu was not the only art to be so regulated.
And unless one views such control as oddly restricting, let’s not forget that in a time when hand to hand combat was the means of conducting war the techniques used in these ryu-ha are comparable to today’s modern weaponry in their importance.

 Sokaku Takeda Biography (9)
Sokaku continued his self-training circuit of the dojos in many towns of Kyushu, and ceaselessly devoted himself to the practice of kendo.
However, he was unable to practice the spear arts as much as he would have liked because there were so few dojos teaching these arts.
One day, after sojutsu training, he said to the students, “I cannot fully concentrate on giving you lessons in sojutsu using only a practice spear.

History of Bogu - Part II   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In regards to the first illustration, I made mention of the style of men being used which seems to be made from bamboo and has no protective padding on top of the head or on the throat.
This goes to prove that much of the training in sojutsu, was not based around yari vs. yari, but also practised against opponents using a variety of different weapons (isshu-jiai), and the evolution of bogu centred on such considerations.
This particular picture is a depiction of one of the three sojutsu schools active in the Kaitsu clan (Ouchi-ryu, Hozoin-ryu, Isshi-ryu), although it is difficult to tell which.

Dedicating himself to austere training, morning and night, Nobuyuki is said to have achieved satori (enlightenment) on 15 May 1671, at the age of 16.
This is the secret principle of Engetsu that is behind the deadly effect of Kan Ryu sojutsu.
As well, in Owari Kan Ryu dojo, the sword and spear are often talked of as "two wheels of a cart." The other oft heard admonition, "The speed at which you pull back the forward-thrust yari determines victory or defeat," is also an important point in sword use.

He also excelled in the lai (art of drawing the sword) of Shinden Fudo Ryu, and his sword could not be seen by the naked eye.
This is not only speaking for Sojutsu but as a general rule regarding the way to defeat an enemy: in manner you must be disciplined, in technique you must be precise, with power you must have adaptability, success requires inner spirit, to achieve the absolute requires unification.
In general the method of Sojutsu is based on logic which shows a weakness when expectations are applied to it.

Kyujitsu, kenjutsu, bajutsu, sojutsu and kumi-uchi were among the basics, these being the techniques of the bow and arrow, the sword, horsemanship, the spear and grappling in armor.
In its classical form, jujutsu was taught in conjunction with other bujutsu such as kenjutsu, sojutsu and tantojutsu.
We are an offshoot of Jikihinkage-Ryu, a bujutsu system incorporating aikijujutsu, kenjutsu, kyujutsu, sojutsu, tessenjutsu, hojojutsu, jojutsu and several other subsystems.

Famous Swordsmen of Japan: Kanenori Dengoro Kurokochi
Curiously, although kenjutsu was generally the primary art of the warrior class (bushi), records of Kanenori’s yari, naginata, shuriken, and jujutsu studies are more complete than those for his study of kenjutsu, and this may be one of the reasons he was considered somewhat unusual.
Later he went by the name Yosobei after being adopted into the family of Shigeyo Yosobei Shiga as an adult [a not uncommon practice in Japan at the time; if a family did not have a male heir, one was adopted, usually from a related family with too many sons].
Incidentally, the Hozoin-ryu Takada-ha sojutsu originally handed down in Aizu began with Masanobu Harada; however, Harada is said to have received only up to the yurushi license, and had not received inka (permission to teach independently).

In addition, there are numerous ryuha which include sojutsu (yari skills) in their curriculums.
The most widely practiced of these would be Kashima Shin Ryu (you should read Karl Friday's history of the ryu "Legacies of the Sword") which is taught all over the world, including at 4 dojos in North America, and Sugino Ha Katori Shinto Ryu.
I was wondering where I could get some decent information about Shin-Kage ryu sojutsu.

E-Budo.com - Naginatajutsu and Sojutsu, the reasons for their obscurity?
It would seem that during the Sengoku Jidai, what I think many experts would agree to be the main source of classical Japanese koryu, the sword was second to the spear or naginita in actual battle field combat.
To (finally) get to the point of this post, I'm in a quandary as to why Naginatajutsu and Sojutsu seem to be propagated to a much lesser degree.
I'm just not quite sure why this is. Were not Sojutsu, and Naginatajutsu to a lesser degree, more important in the Sengoku Jidai than the sword?
