Solomon Ho'opi'i Ka'ai'ai was born in 1902 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the youngest of 21 children.
The King of the Steel Guitar, Sol Hoopii, was a close personal friend of mine from 1942 until his untimely death in Seattle in 1953.
These are not copies of recordings, but actual live performances that have never been heard in the general public since, including Sol's last public performance six weeks before his death.

It was our joy to meet Sol Hoopii personally in 1942 and we were all very close for the next 11 years until Sol's death, here in Seattle in 1953.
I, like my father, appreciated the stylings and abilities of Sol Hoopii and imagine what a thrill it was for me, at the age of 18 years, to personally meet Sol and play rhythm guitar for him.

I was raised on Sol's music since I could remember and was a little remiss to think that since I had become a Christian I shouldn't be listening to Sol's (very jazzy) music.
What a thrill it was to our entire family when we heard that Sol Hoopii had also given his heart to the Lord and was now a Christian, serving the Lord now with his music.
What a thrill it was for me to meet Sol Hoopii PERSONALLY in Seattle in November of 1942.

In fact the Sol is so good I just ordered an extra copy to be mailed as a gift direct to my pal in Hawaii, Ken Emerson (a brilliant acoustic steel player himself and big fan of Sol's).
Both Iona and Ho'opi'i were master guitarists employing sparkling technique along with the ability to grandstand in breath-taking style when the occasion called for it.

It makes you think of old Hollywood, the William Randolph Hearst Holywood and it makes you wish you had the album on record instead of on CD so that you could play it faster or slower depending on your taste (the same holds true for Sol Hoopii Vol 1 & 2).

Lightninboy, I'm a great fan of Sol Hoopii too, but I don't really see how he fits into this discussion.
Sol was one of the first people to play 6 string electric slide guitar,(1935),all be it laying on his lap, but still electric slide.
Sol cut his teeth on blues and jazz.

I've always been afraid I might be disappointed by recordings done in the twilight of his career.

Sol Hoopii's Novelty Trio had a very interesting style that often mixed Jazz and Blues with traditional Hawaiian music.
The Novelty Trio's cover version of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings' Farewell Blues is one of the more interesting string band recordings of the 1920s.
Not all of Hoopii's records should be considered Jazz but when he did start "jazzin' it up" the results were often quite good.
