Topic: Sola gratia

Christian Fellowship Devotionals - 2000-02-22 - Sola Gratia
Sola Gratia refers to salvation specifically and means grace alone.
So when Sola Gratia is used as a phrase it means that salvation is only by grace through faith in the atonement of Christ.
Sola Gratia maintains that God is both the initiator and the accomplisher of the salvation of the sinner.

  What is sola scriptura?
Sola scriptura means that Scripture alone is authoritative for the faith and practice of the Christian.
Sola scriptura was the "rallying cry" of the Protestant reformation.
Sola scriptura is not as much of an argument against tradition as it is an argument against unbiblical and/or anti-biblical doctrines.

Sola gratia is one of the five solas propounded to summarise the Reformers' basic beliefs during the Protestant Reformation; it is a Latin term meaning grace alone.
Consequently, they argued that a sinner is not accepted by God on account of the change wrought in the believer by God's grace, and indeed, that the believer is accepted without any regard for the merit of his works - for no one deserves salvation, a concept that some take to the extreme of Antinomianism.
Sola gratia is different from Sola fide because faith alone is considered either a work or is insufficient for salvation which can only be granted freely by God to whom he chooses.

 De Sola Scriptura
In conclusion, Sola Scriptura is a severe misreading of scripture by a few individuals who couldn’t submit to the authority of the Church so thereby justified their rebellion by saying the Scriptures were the only rule of Faith.
Their problem was this, they read a certain passage in the Bible that at first may have seemed to contradict the Church’s teaching and had that verse interpret the entire Bible, and they didn’t bother to read the Bible in its fullest context.
Sola Scriptura is not a “firm foundation”, biblical, or historical.

Five solas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Five Solas are five Latin phrases (or slogans) that emerged during the Protestant Reformation and summarize the Reformers' basic beliefs and emphasis in contradistinction to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church of the day.
The word sola means "alone," "only," and "single" in Latin; the five solas were what the Reformers believed to be the "only" things needed in their respective functions in Christian salvation.
The adjective (sola) and the noun (scriptura) are in the ablative case rather than the nominative case to indicate that the Bible does not stand by itself but is an instrument of God by which He comes to man. This principle asserts that the Bible is the only source of Christian doctrine.

 Sola Scriptura
The Solas, In Relation To The Reformation Martin Luther’s Ninety-five Theses, was the event that set off the Protestant reformation.
In response to the heretical teachings of the Church of Rome, the reformation spawned four “watchwords.” Theses were, sola Gratia, sola Christo, sola Fide, and sola Scriptura.
The Roman theologian, John Eck, stated that “The Scriptures are not authentic except by the authority of the Church.1” The implication of such a statement is that for the Roman Catholics, the only authority is the church or sola ecclesia.

Sola Fide, Solafidianism, By Faith Alone
Lutheranism soon became more than the experience of Luther, but it never deviated from his theme that people are made right with God sola gratia and sola fide - that is, only by the divine initiative of grace as received through God's gift of faith.
Because Luther came across his discoveries by reading the Bible, he also liked to add to his motto the exhortation sola scriptura, which means that Lutherans are to use the Bible alone as the source and norm for their teachings.
Usually, a third Latin phrase is associated with those two, Sola Scriptura, which means "by the Bible alone".

Although it is true that each of these systems of theology have differences (particularly with regard to the degree of continuity and discontinuity each sees throughout God's revelation in Scripture), there are points of agreement among them that should not be overlooked as well.
At any rate, Sola Gratia Ministries has staff members who adhere to each of these respective paradigms, and we have agreed to charitably disagree on certain issues and to progressively dialogue with each other on these matters so that we might come to a more precise understanding of God's purposes through redemptive history.
We would like to clearly state that we explicitly affirm the primacy of the local church in God's program, and therefore each staff member is fully involved in and committed to a local church.

Many Protestants today realize that Catholics adhere to two of the important "solas" related to salvation sola gratia (by grace alone) and solo Christo (by Christ alone) but fewer are aware that Catholics can also accept the formula of justification sola fide (by faith alone), provided this phrase is properly understood.
The term pistis is used in the Bible in a number of different senses, ranging from intellectual belief (Romans 14:22, 23, James 2:19), to assurance (Acts 17:31), and even to trustworthiness or reliability (Romans 3:3, Titus 2:10).
The canon only condemns sola fide if it is used so as to understand that nothing else [besides intellectual assent] is required to attain justification.

Bouyer goes on to say that the purpose of Luther’s sola gratia and sola fide is to reject the idea that we have to add something external to these two things–grace, which gives, and faith, which receives.

We should not underestimate the tragedy that came upon those of mankind, who had once known the light, life and liberty that the coming of Jesus Christ brought, when they drifted from the foundations of life in Him.
When men returned to the great principles of Biblical Christianity, as occurred at the Reformation, and as summarized in the Solas, we find the Triune God, was afforded His rightful place, and man once again knew true peace and happiness in this world, and assurance of it in the world to come.
It is Grace Alone - Sola Gratia that works in us so that our character and being are changed from what is not right and lovely, to what is progressively made more good, just, pure, lovely, in short, more holy.
