The county derives its name indirectly from that of the Franciscan missionary, Father, whose name was given in baptism to the chief of one of the Native American tribes of the region.
Before receiving the name Solano, the chief was called Sem-yeto, which signifies "brave or fierce hand." At the request of General Mariano Vallejo, the county was named for, who at one time ruled over most of the land and tribes between the and the Sacramento River.
Out of the total population, 10.30% of those under the age of 18 and 6.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

 Solano County Government Center
On April 27, 1999 the Fairfield City Council and Solano County Board of Supervisors held a Joint Study Session to hear a presentation from City and County staff on the potential for development of a County Government Center in Downtown Fairfield.
On November 6, 2001, the Solano County Board of Supervisors authorized staff to retain the services of an Architectural and Engineering consultant/Master Architect (Johnson Fain Partners) and a Project/Construction Manager (URS Corporation) to assist the County in developing and implementing a design builder procurement process in accordance with Section 20133 of the Public Contract Code.
The EIR is scheduled to be presented to the County Board of Supervisors for certification in October 2002.

The Greens appointed a County Council to coordinate and represent the party: Ken Smith of Vallejo; David Sternbergh of Vacaville; and Doug McDonald of Benicia, who was also named treasurer.

Last month, Secretary of State Kevin Shelley banned Diebold e-voting machines in Solano, San Diego, San Joaquin and Kern counties in the November election because he said a lack of a paper trail made them unreliable.
Ten other counties that use older electronic voting equipment must meet nearly two dozen conditions in order to use their touch screen machines this year.
Legal advisers warned that Diebold could sue the county for up to the full amount of the contract when it was terminated.
