USATODAY.com - A perfect storm of space weather
MONTREAL — Seven solar blasts that shook Earth's upper atmosphere last year set records for extreme space weather, according to a panel of solar scientists.
Large bursts of electrically charged solar particles pose the greatest risk to those satellites, says Lloyd's Simon Clapham, and luckily the Halloween storms did not set records in that regard.
Satellite operators and power companies now closely follow space weather forecasts, says solar physicist Thomas Zurbuchen of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and were able to shut down vulnerable systems.

But the levels of solar activity required for this to occur are not observed in carbon-14 and beryllium-10 records over the past several millennia, which indicates that such an increase in amplitude of surface magnetism-driven variations in solar luminosity is unlikely in the present epoch.
It is found that the solar irradiance records from the ACRIM and the ERB radiometers, after subtraction of the calculated sunspot-blocking contribution, exhibit a short-term modulation which is better explained by faculae than be errors in the sunspot-blocking function.
Also treated are solar rotation and advection, observations of solar photospheric activity and magnetism, the solar chromosphere and corona, solar prominences and flares, the dynamics of the solar magnetic field, the solar wind and heliosphere, and the variability of the sun.

 Fantastic Voyage - Lakeside
Although guitarist Shockley was an integral part of the Solar house band, Lakeside lacked the profile of labelmates Shalamar.
Released on the Solar label, it was the first of a series of popular singles including ‘Fantastic Voyage' (1980), 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' (1982) and 'Outrageous' (1984), all of which reached the US RandB Top10.
Fantastic Voyage was not only Lakeside's first gold album: the title track became the team's biggest pop hit and an RandB chartopper, and was revived successfully by rap star Coolio in 1995.

SUNSHINE - Online Information article about SUNSHINE
The Callendar sunshine recorder' gives a record of the difference of temperature of two wires, one solarized and the other not, and it is therefore a continuous record of the thermal effect of solar and terrestrial radiation.
In these circumstances it becomes a question whether the amount of sunshine recorded should be referred to the maximum possible for an uninterrupted horizon or the maximum possible for the particular exposure.
Other recorders use the thermal or photographic effect Other Types of Sunshine Recorder.—There are, however, various other conventions as to sunshine which are used as the basis of recorders of quite different types.

PTOLEMY (CLAUDIUS PTOLEMAEUS) - Online Information article about PTOLEMY (CLAUDIUS PTOLEMAEUS)
He begins by telling us how Hipparchus was led to discover the precession of the equinoxes; he relates the observations by which Hipparchus verified the eccentricity of the solar orbit imperfectly known to his Chaldaean predecessors, and gives the hypothesis of the eccentric by which he explained the inequality of the sun's motion.
For each parallel or climate, which is determined by the length of the longest day, he gives the latitude, a principal place on the parallel, and the lengths of the shadows of the gnomon at the solstices and equinox.
Both these geographers were ignorant of the vast extension of Africa to the south of this line and even of the equator, and conceived it as trending away west from the Cinnamon Land and then north-west to the Straits of Gibraltar.

 Tracking the Day-of-the-Sun
Through the continual reckoning of the two cited stations, the rate of the solar year can precisely (perfectly!) be determined by recording day units (a number of 346 day units).
Philo's reference to this sect's observance of a 'supreme festival' after every 7 Sabbaths, and the cited tie to 'the holy table of offering' indicates that Temple priests might also have celebrated this same supreme festival (and also once every 7 lunar Sabbaths).
Philo's treatise on the 7th day Sabbath is significant in showing that certain Hebrews of the First Century CE did celebrate the Sabbath by a schedule that was rather different from the Sabbath schedule adhered to within the province of Judea.

 Speleothem Records
These records exhibit very rapid increasing of the solar insolation at 139 kyrs BP responsible for the termination II (the end of the last glaciation) and demonstrate that solar luminosity variations contribute to Earth's heating almost as much as the orbital variations of the Earth's orbit (Milankovitch cycles).
Solar luminosity and orbital variations both cause variations of the solar insolation affecting the climate by the same mechanism.
Solar luminosity variations contribute to Earth's heating almost as much as the variations of the Earth's orbit (Milankovitch cycles).

SPACE.com -- Sun's Output Increasing in Possible Trend Fueling Global Warming
Separate records of sunspots, auroral activity (the Northern Lights) and terrestrial deposits of certain substances generated in atmospheric reactions triggered by solar output, suggest the Sun was persistently active prior to the onset of this Little Ice Age, as scientists call the event.
Large-scale ocean and climate variations on Earth can also mask long-term trends and can make it difficult to sort out what is normal, what is unusual, and which effects might or might not result from shifts in solar radiation.
Solar max has also been tied to a 2 percent increase in clouds over much of the United States.

Dawn investigates the internal structure, density and homogeneity of two complementary protoplanets, 1 Ceres and 4 Vesta, that have remained intact since their formation, by measuring their mass, shape, volume and spin rate with imagery, and gravity.

Records of comet observations exist in the historic writings of many cultures.

We also compare the meteor showers found in the single meteor records with the records of meteor storms and intense showers compiled from the world wide chronicles, as well as with the recent modern observations.
The activity curves for various groups of meteor echoes were constructed and studied with respect to their variation depending on daytime as well as solar longitude, and on the masses considered.
Even for sporadic meteors the enhancement can be of the order of a factor of close to 2 but for meteor showers the enhancement can be considerably greater with the magnitude of enhancement depending on the speed of the meteors relative to the planet and the degree of collimation of the stream.
