Solar power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solar design is the use of architectural features to replace the use of grid electricity and fossil fuels with the use of solar energy and decrease the energy needed in a home or building with insulation and efficient lighting and appliances.
Solar heating systems are generally composed of solar thermal collectors, a fluid system to move the heat from the collector to its point of usage, and a reservoir to stock the heat for subsequent use.
A solar chimney is a relatively low tech solar thermal power plant where air passes under a very large agricultural glass house (between 2 and 30 km in diameter), is heated by the sun and channeled upwards towards a convection tower.

Solar chimney - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A solar chimney is an apparatus for harnessing solar energy by convection of heated air.
The proposed solar chimney was originally to be 1 km high, and the base 3.5 km in diameter (for a total of about 10 km²).
Solar chimneys will have a superior level of greenhouse abatement by producing only clean green sustainable electricity, no coal or gas fired electricity generator is able to compete with the clean emission free credentials of a solar chimney.

Solar Tower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Solar Tower could be built almost entirely from recycled materials and be scaled to as much as 1 km in height and generate upwards of 200 MW.
Given that a solar chimney is "mostly concrete with a few moving parts" and does not have a lot of mechanical complexity, it is also considered to be economically attractive.
An alternative of the solar chimney are the Energy towers proposed by Dan Zaslavsky.

Solar chimney plus bell jar - a thought experiment
It involves a chimney of height 1000 metres and diameter 120 metres and a solar collector of diameter 7000 metres (Figure 1).
The solar chimney is driven simply by natural convection and, for a 1000 metre height chimney, has an efficiency of about 3%.
Some is lost through the glass and the walls of the chimney; but the large majority emerges from the top of the chimney as a stream of warm air up to 20 K above ambient temperature and with a velocity of up to 12 metres per second.

It is encouraging to know based on the solar chimney power plant’s ability to generate electricity; even a small number of solar towers could be introduced to replace a large nuclear power station, currently the dominant alternate power source.
Solar Towers can not convert the entire proportion of solar heat collected into electricity, but manages to compensate for this disadvantage by their cheap, robust construction and low maintenance costs.

 Halfbakery: Mountainside Solar Chimneys
Solar chimneys are an excellent idea; they combine the best parts of solar and wind power to create reliable, environmentally friendly, cheap electrical power 24 hours a day.
Since the technology requires a great deal of stored solar energy (in the Wired article, the greenhouse is 6 square miles), and the ideal chimney would be vertical (which would put the 'greenhouse' in the middle of the mountain), put a solar concentrator at the top to focus sunlight on a heatsink at the bottom.
The chimney doesn't need to be vertical: all that matters is the pressure difference, which only depends on the difference in altitude between top and bottom, not the verticallity itself.

Wired News: Solar Tower of Power Finds Home
Announced several years ago, the 3,280-foot Solar Tower is one of the most ambitious alternative energy projects on the planet: a renewable energy plant that pumps out the same power as a small reactor but is totally safe.
Originally slated to be operational this year, construction of the massive project won't begin until 2006 at the earliest, said Roger Davey, chairman of EnviroMission Limited, the Melbourne, Australia, company behind the venture.
"Solar chimneys (towers) have become a hot area of research recently," said S.A. Sherif, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Florida, who wrote several papers on the technology in the early 1990s and is the technical editor of the
