Your Home Technical Manual - 4.3 Solar Hot Water
A solar water heater can provide between 50 percent and 90 percent of your total hot water requirements, depending on the climate and the model of heater.
Solar collectors trap and use heat from the sun to raise the temperature of water.
For maximum efficiency, ensure that the solar collectors are not shaded by trees or nearby buildings, particularly in winter when the sun is low in the sky.

Greenhouse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The glass used for a greenhouse works as a selective transmission medium for different spectral frequencies, and its effect is to trap energy within the greenhouse, which heats both the plants and the ground inside it.
Greenhouses are often used for growing flowers, vegetables, fruits, and tobacco plants.
Greenhouses are increasingly important in the food supply of high latitude countries.

U.S. Global Change Research Information Office
Solar UV radiation, unlike that in the visible and infrared spectrum, seldom reaches the surface of the Earth since it is absorbed by the atmosphere.
One consequence of these solar perturbations is to complicate the detection of human-induced depletion of the protective ozone layer; another may be to perturb the temperature at the Earth's surface, through connections that link the upper and lower parts of the atmosphere.
Looking ahead, were solar changes limited to what has been measured in the last fifteen years, future changes in the Sun's total radiation would have only a negligible effect on the temperature increases of 1 to 3°C that are now projected in IPCC models for the end of the next century.

Solar greenhouse (technical) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A solar greenhouse works by letting in solar radiation and trapping the energy from that radiation to increase and maintain the internal temperature above that of the temperature outside - see greenhouse effect for details.
The most basic aspects of greenhouse design are: first, to thermodynamically isolate the system to stop convection and conduction from equalizing the temperature with the ambient temperature; and second, to provide a covering that is transparent to incoming solar radiation to provide the heat source for the greenhouse.
The soil mass at the base of the greenhouse acts to absorb a portion of the available heat during the solar period of the day for later use as a night time radiant heat source.

Designing and Building a Solar Greenhouse or Sunspace
The optimum orientation for solar sunspace and solar greenhouse glazing is due south, though solar sunspace and solar greenhouse perform well when the glazing faces within about 25º of true south (not magnetic south).
Solar greenhouses will need direct light to plants and generally cannot use this option, but many solar sunspaces could accomplish their designed purpose with a solid roof and overhangs.
A more finished solar sunspace or solar greenhouse with quality wood or aluminum framing and higher quality glazing will be more expensive and costs may be similar to the costs of any other type of home addition.

 Used Greenhouse
The term ''greenhouse effect'' may be used to refer to two different things in common parlance: the natural greenhouse effect, which refers to the greenhouse effect which occurs naturally on earth, and the enhanced (anthropogenic) greenhouse effect, which results from human activities (global warming).
The remaining 70% of the incoming solar radiation is absorbed: 16% by the atmosphere (including the almost complete absorption of shortwave ultraviolet over most areas by the stratospheric ozone layer); 3% by clouds; and 51% by the land and oceans.
Greenhouse gases (GHG) are gaseous components of the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect.

Energy: Solar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Solar greenhouses, on the other hand, are heated primarily by the sun, and are often attached to houses to provide home heating as well.
Solar water heaters for domestic hot water are becoming more widely used in the industrialized nations as a response to the "energy crisis".
This means that while solar energy is an excellent, low-cost means of creating temperature differences of tens of degrees for drying and heating, it is inevitably difficult and expensive to collect and concentrate solar energy to generate electricity or perform mechanical work.

Solar energy property is equipment that uses solar energy to heat or cool a building and provide hot water or electricity for use within or offset loads associated with the building.
Greenhouses or other sunspaces which do not provide solar heat to an adjacent building or which require heat from non-solar sources to maintain inside temperatures for any reason are not eligible for the tax credit.
Solar radiation is absorbed by the wall, converted to heat and transferred to the building by convection, radiation or combination thereof.

Global Warming FAQ - What is Causing the Increased Warmth?
Greenhouse gases are cycled naturally - they are emitted, and then they are either absorbed or broken down (here are illustrations showing the global carbon cycle and the methane cycle).
Greenhouse gases cause the greenhouse effect because radiation from the sun can penetrate the atmosphere and be absorbed by the earth, but radiation from the earth cannot escape as easily.
In the 1400s to 1700, decreased solar activity (the 'Maunder Minimum) led to a period of global cooling, known as the 'Little Ice Age' that was particularly acute in Europe (discussed here).

Solar is more diffuse, making it more expensive to extract, but it is much more evenly distributed over the Earth’s surface.
Because humans tend to live in places that have plenty of sunshine, solar power is locally available practically anywhere it is needed — in the world’s largest cities or its most rural villages.
When solar power does become cost-competitive, the market will be almost limitless, but the infrastructure needed to accommodate this market growth will not be in place.

Saudi Arabia realized the weight of solar as a future energy source and began in the Seventies several major research and pilot plants projects whose objectives are to introduce the various application technologies, develop systems to satisfy the national needs, and to enhance the capability within the country to develop and apply the solar technology.
The paper concludes that the solar programs with the U.S. and the solar electric and hydrogen programs with West Germany proved to be useful to assess specific usage of solar energy, and to estimate the possible extent of renewable energy contribution to the future energy needs of the country.

SolarMission Technologies, Inc. :: The Solar Tower Project is designed to provide large scale renewable energy with ...
Solar tower technology is created when the sun’s radiation is used to heat a large body of air, which is then forced by the laws of physics (hot air rises) to move as a hot wind through large turbines to generate electricity.
A solar thermal power station using solar tower technology will create the conditions to cause hot wind to flow continuously through its turbines to generate electricity.
A technical review report prepared by Sinclair Knight Merz, one of the world's leading engineering specialists, independently agree the proposed solar thermal power station’s design concepts and construction methods are well proven and it can be built.

 81.05.07: Solar Energy
Solar energy is truly the oldest form of energy, and there is a good chance that it may turn out to be the most important answer to our energy problem.
Solar energy systems tend to attain optimum performance in modules that are smaller in scale than those common in other energy forms: for example coal or nuclear electrical generating plants, or the proposed coal conversion plants.

NEED AND DESIGN FOR A SOLAR GREENHOUSE
In Europe, glasshouses or plastic greenhouses, are widely used under a number of different climatic conditions from Northern Latitude (Denmark, Germany, England, Netherlands) to, more recently, Mediterranean countries (Italy, South France, Spain, North Africa).
In France, initial development was restricted to the regions located North of the Loire ; it was perhaps wrongly assumed that the regions more favored by a greater amount of sunshine and by milder winter temperatures did not need such production equipment.
The greenhouse -which can be defined according to its outer shell (shape and covering material : glass and more recently plastics films) and its technical air conditioning facilities (heating, cooling, ventilation…) - represents a powerful means of modifying the microclimate of the crops.
