Solaris Operating Environment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solaris was also ported to the PowerPC architecture for version 2.5.1, but the port was cancelled almost as soon as it was released.
Solaris 10 is available for x86-64 as well as SPARC and x86 architectures.
The most recent versions of Solaris (as of early 2005) are Solaris 7, the 64-bit Solaris 8, Solaris 9 (released May 22, 2002), and Solaris 10 (released February 1, 2005).

 Solaris 10 Security
Solaris 10 offers key technologies designed to protect enterprises from internal and external attacks, while reducing the cost of management and protecting existing investments.
Solaris 9 introduced the option to disable execution of user programs on stack and assist in lowering the likely hood of exploit from stack based buffer overflows, this feature is only available on SPARC and AMD64 systems because it requires hardware support that is not available in current Intel 32bit CPUs.
In Solaris 10, Sun introduces a more granular privilege use model that helps developers and system administrators ensure that application vulnerabilities cannot be exploited and lead to widespread system damage.

Solaris 10, which will ship by the end of January, is an extensive makeover of the Sun operating system with more than 600 new features.
Solaris Containers: This feature lets users partition a server into as many as 8,000 secure partitions and consolidate thousands of applications onto one system.
Sun has also boosted the security of Solaris compared with past versions by including features that were previously only available in Trusted Solaris, used by parts of the military and some civilian agencies.

Solaris 10 Gets Ready to Roll
Solaris 10 comes with true 64-bit AMD support, which results in a three-fold speed improvement out of the box, compared to a system running the current 32-bit x86 Solaris.
Solaris 10 now has four CDs, but, as is the case with Solaris 9, only the first CD is needed for a basic install.
While it is possible to run Solaris 10 on a system running another operating system, the installer doesn't provide an obvious way to do this, and the documentation is of little help.

Solaris 10 Tests Yield Performance Gains - Computerworld
Prior to the development of Solaris 10, interest in Sun's systems "was somewhat dwindling" at FedEx, said Don Fike, the Memphis-based company's technical director.
Fike added that as a result of Solaris 10, FedEx's use of Sun servers, which run many of its mission-critical systems, would at least stay the same and might even expand.
DTrace lets users examine how applications interact with Solaris 10, and Fike said he has been able to identify performance problems in live code within 15 minutes by using the tool—regardless of which third-party application may be running.

BetaNews | Sun Preps Solaris 10 With 'Predictive' Self Healing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
One of Solaris 10's core design aims is to reduce licensing costs. Sun has turned to N1 Grid containers, which it refers to as the next generation of software partitioning, to allow a single system to be divided up into 4000 different partitions per copy of Solaris.
In the case of Solaris 10's self healing capabilities, D. Brown's Iams is firmly in the Sun camp.
Although security is a primary focus of Solaris 10, better performance is firmly embedded within the brick and mortar of the OS.  Sun claims that users will experience between a three to thirty percent boost in speed.

The privileges and privilege sets in Solaris 10 are represented to userland processes and non-core kernel modules as strings; privilege sets are bitmasks of undetermined size; they can only be allocated through the C library routines.
A Solaris binary compiled for 4 privilege sets of each 32 privileges will continue to work on a Solaris system with 5 privilege sets each of which can contain 64 privileges and with all the privileges having their internal representation renumbered.

 Solaris 10 (UrbanMainframe.com)
I have enjoyed using Solaris (versions 8 and 9) on Sun workstations for a couple of years.
Solaris 10 boasts some impressive features: N1 Grid Containers, DTrace, Predictive Self-Healing, Linux Interoperability and, perhaps the most interesting feature of all, Solaris ZFS (Zettabyte File System).
ZFS, according to Sun, is a "breakthrough file system," designed to deliver "virtually unlimited capacity, provable data integrity and near-zero administration." ZFS protects all data with 64-bit checksums and silently detects/corrects data corruption.

'With Solaris 10, we are getting back to our core base, the developer base and the community around the operating system and the applications built on top of it,' McNealy told a standing-room-only crowd gathered in the Tech's I-Max theater.
Sun is billing Solaris 10 as an OS 'designed for datacenter workloads.' The company claims that it is the fastest operating system ever released by Sun, more than 40 percent faster than Solaris 9 in web server performance on both SPARC and x86-based hardware.
Among the most notable new features of the OS is Solaris Containers, a technology designed to customers to partition a single copy of Solaris into more than 8,000 'containers,' each of which can be separated from the others with firewalls.
