Solaris (Atari 2600) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solaris was a game for the Atari 2600 (also supported by Atari 7800), published in 1986 by Atari.
It is far more complex than most other Atari 2600 games; the Author worked at it for over one year, fine-tuning every aspect of the code and pushing the console's rather simplistic hardware to the limit.
Solaris is considered to be a sequel to Atari's 1982 hit "Star Raiders", as both games feature an enemy race known as "Zylons", and both "Solaris" and "Star Raiders" were written by Neubauer.

Atari 2600 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Atari had spun off an engineering think-tank in 1975 called Cyan Engineering to research next-generation video game systems, and had been working on a prototype known as "Stella" (named after one of the engineers' bicycles) for some time.
Atari then licensed the smash arcade hit Space Invaders by Taito, which greatly increased the unit's popularity when it was released in May 1980, doubling sales again to over 2 million units.
Atari continued to scoop up licenses during the shelf life of the 2600, the most prominent of which included Pac-Man and E.T. Public disappointment with these two titles and the market saturation of bad third-party titles are cited as big reasons for the video game crash of 1983.

 ClassicGaming.com - The Museum: Atari 2600
Atari wasn't very happy about having to deal with this new competition (as Atari was the sole producer of VCS games prior to Activision's formation), and at the time they didn't realize that this was the beginning of the end of their software dominance.
Coleco and Atari settled out of court, and many other companies quickly came out with their own 2600 clones, some of which are still made to this day.
Atari proposed their "My First Computer" add-on; Entex proposed the "Piggyback"; Unitronics pushed "The Expander"; and Spectravideo came up with "Compumate." They all failed miserably (or weren't even released), and were crushed by competing home computers and console systems.

Developed by Doug Neubauer, Solaris was originally slated to be released in 1984 as The Last Starfighter, based on the movie of the same title.
Solaris is composed of 4 different game screens: the space travel screen, the galaxy scanner, the warp corridor and the planet surface (either a Zylon planet, populated by enemy Zylons, or a friendly Federation planet).
The box is nicely full-colored, as it’s part of the burgundy series of 2600 releases, but the label is a fl and white version of the box art, and the manual is monochrome (the only color being a pinkish shade of red).

You shouldn't believe everything you read, but there's still a quite vibrant Atari 2600 "homebrew" game-making scene, not to mention considerable curiosity about what made the old classics tick, generally among programmers who enjoy feeling like an Airbus engineer looking at a Dreidecker.
The 2600 wasn't the first home game console, but it was the first one to achieve real popularity.
