Soldering   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
After you have completed soldering the wire or whatever it is you are soldering, you will want to wipe the tip on a wet sponge while the gun/iron is turned on and is hot.
After that, melt a small amount of solder on the tip and it is ready to be put away, or to solder the next object.
Take your solder gun and melt the solder on the motor, and on the wire together, take the gun away, let it harden, and you are done.

Solder feeding gun and attachment - Patent 4411379
This solder feeding gun is characterized by being adapted to carry such torch and to feed the strip of solder with only one hand, by allowing to feed either a bar or a wire of solder, and by allowing use of both the torch and the solder feeding gun separate from each other.
This solder feeding gun comprises a body forming a hand grip portion, a holder portion for a soldering torch, a holder for a supply of coiled solder, and a piston chamber portion, with a piston and a finger actuated lever to feed the solder adjacent the nozzle of the soldering torch.
The soldering torch of interest in this case is made of a tank or cylinder for a combustible gas and with a nozzle connected to the cylinder to burn the gas and produce heat to melt the solder.

Someone recently mentioned a solder wave process using a soldering iron and a largish tip to drag a blob of solder along over the IC legs, relying on surface tension to leave just the right amount of solder on each connection.
Squeeze the trigger on the paste solder paste gun and apply a liberal amount of paste to all of the pads, not one pad at a time, just squeeze a continuous bead around covering all of the pads and the space between them.
Apart from the variable heat soldering iron, you'll need a magnifying glass to check if the pads for ICs are soldered properly, a soldersooker (or solder pump) and solder tape stuff (i can't remember the name but it consists of a reel of sorta woven copper ribbon).

 Cold Heat Soldering Gun
We do not recommend it for soldering of large metallic components that require a lot of heat transfer or for soldering sensitive electronic components that may be damaged by fast-rising temperatures or high electrical current.
As far as using it to solder wires and such it would be a great tool, after all look closely to the commercial that had us all pissing in our pants the first time through watching it (for us experienced solder gun users anyhow.
It sounds like resistance soldering to me and should be safe for electronics they have been using it for years on model railroads with dcc systems which have digital components such as ic chips.

I use a 40 watt soldering pen, this is good for light to medium work but does not have the heat for heavy and large objects.
The only time you really need to use a soldering gun or torch is when you're scratchbuilding in brass, and need to solder large pieces of metal together.
Bottom line is clean the parts and the tip of the gun, use high heat and be fast, tin the parts first with as little amount of solder as possible, assemble the parts carefully and use only a dab of solider.

The easiest way i found to solder the metal tangs to the batteries was to cut a piece of solder about 1/4 inch long and the fold it back on itself so you have a doublewide piece about 1/8 inch long.
Place the solder gun on top of the metal tang and hold it there for the few seconds it takes for the solder to melt.
Now that the metal tang is contacting the battery, hold the solder gun there for a "one onethousand" count and remove the gun.

Solder Gun   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
A solder is a metal alloy (often of tin and lead), usually with a low melting point, that is melted and used to join metallic surfaces, especially in the fields of electronics and plumbing, in a process called soldering.
Hard solder, as used for brazing, is generally a copper/ zinc or copper/silver alloy, and melts at higher temperatures.
Enameling solder has a high melting point, close to that of the material itself, to prevent the jointdesoldering during firing in the enamelling process.

Soldering is a process that uses a low temperature metal (solder) that melts and bonds with the metal it comes in contact with.
Touch the solder to the gun tip, and let just a little melt and remain on the tip.
Touch the gun tip with solder "bubble" to the joint, and hold until you see the solder wick away from the tip and onto the part joint.

I agree with Michael and James on type of soldering gun required (100- 150 Watt) and type of solder to be used.
A 30 Watt pencil gun is not meant for the large gauge wire you will be soldering.
You don't want to force the solder onto the wires you want it to be pulled into the inner part of the twisted wires.

Most soldering problems a racer encounters are not caused by the flux or the solder but by their lack of good soldering techniques and trying to use a crappy iron.
The joint is heated, soldered and cooled before the the heat has a chance to conduct through the copper.
Put enough solder on the tip of the iron adequate for the job and touch the iron to the joint and let the solder flow off the iron to the parts and pull off.

Solder guns that haven't been used recently tend to have trouble heating properly due to corrosion where the tip contacts the metal posts that supply the current.

But it is worth knowing that there is a fundamental metallurgical problem involved in soldering: the solder dissolves copper.
I am sure that heavy-duty users of solder guns will confirm that the area of the tip that comes in contact with the solder tends to erode.
The erosion effect is probably worse with soldering guns which can reach high temperatures than with soldering stations using solder tips which operate at a regulated lower temperature.

No matter where I place the new soldering gun on the work bench, the gun will eventually slowly drift off and plummet to the floor resulting in a broken housing.
The attraction between the concrete floor and the soldering gun is a mystery and this always occurs within the first two or three days of usage.
When I bring the gun home from the hamfest, maybe I should just go ahead and drop the gun on the floor in a controlled manner, perhaps reducing the overall damage and then enjoy the magnetic immunity that results from the impact.

In case you've never seen one, it's a different animal: it uses a loop of copper(?) which is heated by a low voltage/high current transformer when you squeeze the "trigger".
Anyway, my answer would be to look for a more expensive or "industrial" model, or if (as with many other power tools) older ones were better-built, for a good used example.
Or grab a relatively high-powered (60 to 100 watts) soldering iron like a Weller WP series and put a chunky bit in it.
