Sole (fish) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The soles are a family (Soleidae) of flatfishes found in both oceans and freshwater, feeding on small crustaceans and other invertebrates.
The distinctive features of the sole is a flat, oval body with the eyes paired up on the same side which makes it an exception for the rule of bilateral symmetry, although their eyes are located on different sides in early development.
The sole is adapted to live on the ocean floor with its eyes facing upwards and its blind side towards the bottom, often covered in mud which in combination with its dark colours makes it hard to spot.

Soles and other flat fishes are bottom feeding, carnivorous and asymmetrical with both eyes being present either on the right or left side.
The fish does not usually occur in aggregations in the inshore fishing grounds after October, but large shoals occur at all depths in the inshore waters during September and October which form the chief commercial fishery season for this fish.
The migration of soles from the offshore to inshore waters and vice-versa appears to be for the purpose of feeding and breeding respectively.

Northern rock sole from the Aleutian Islands region had a significantly greater prevalence (36%) and mean intensity (10.2/infested fish) of Naobranchia occidentalis than northern rock sole from the Gulf of Alaska (22%, and 4.4, respectively) but did not differ significantly in prevalence and mean intensity of Nectobrachia indivisa.
All rock soles were examined in hauls with few fish (n [is less than or equal to] 50), and a random selection of fish in larger hauls were subsampled in a manner similar to that used for obtaining a random subsample for lengths (see Martin, 1997, for Gulf of Alaska bottom trawl survey methods).
Roubal and Graham (1999) noted that the smallest fish in their study were not infested with Naobranchia variabilis, which attaches to gill filaments in a similar manner as N. occidentalis, and suggested it was because those fish simply had not been encountered by a parasite.

Daly): The Irish quota for sole in (Area V IIa) for 1989 is 180 tonnes and is a reduction of 35 tonnes on the 1988 level.
The overfishing occurred because the richest sole grounds do not fall under Irish jurisdiction and, due to landings abroad, there were delays in receiving the necessary logbook returns.
The main elements of the regime are intended to restrict the quantity of sole which may be landed by Irish vessels at any one time and to divide the quota between beam-trawlers and conventional vessels.
