  soleares

Flamenco rhythm analysis - description of soleares and siguiriyas rhythms (compás), with tablature, audio files, ...
Soleares, or soleá, is one of the most important styles of flamenco singing, guitar playing and dancing.
It has a peculiar rhythm (or compás) that is found in other styles of flamenco such as alegrías, and other members of the cantiñas group.
The tempo here is faster than in soleares, making it more logical to count only the accented beats in a framework of five irregularly spaced beats.

 Flamenco 12-Count Compas (Soleares Family)
Soleares has a compas that can be expressed consistently in phrases 12 counts long; the actual metric expression can depend on the emphasis to be placed on the musical phrase.
The most fundamental cycle of the Soleares family consists of four measures of 3/4 time, with the "resolution" phrase on counts 10-12, with accentuation on the first count of each measure.
Although divisible by 12 in this context, this form of Bulerias should be still be thought of in "sixes", counting in eighth notes in the above context.

 Noche Flamenca
The main characteristics of this style are the richness of its guitar accompaniment, the intricacy of the dancing, the demands of its difficult rhythm, and its lively sound.
However, unlike soleares, it has a fast and lively rhythm-indeed, the fastest in all flamenco-and it provides enormous scope from improvisation on the part of dancers, singers, and guitarists.
One can say that the soleares is the perfect form of cante Flamenco, where beauty and depth of feeling are in harmony.

The contribution of the Gypsies to cante flamenco. prof. Pierre Lefranc
Conversely, 6 per cent of the siguiriyas and 22 per cent of the soleares are of Andalusian, non-Gypsy, origin.
This is the case of siguiriyas and soleares created by two non-Gypsies, Silverio Franconetti and Aurelio de Cádiz, which are often sung by Gypsies in Jerez and in Cadiz, because they find that those songs meet their requirements and have adopted them.
The tonás, being unascribed, form a distinct group, but the siguiriyas and soleares represent the collective achievement of a few dozen creators, no more, whose names are known and who all lived between Seville, generally Triana, and Cadiz.

 History of Flamenco
Flamenco is a tripartite art, involving singing, dance and the guitar simultaneously - as well as rhytmic punctuation (by hand-claps and other methods) that is considered an art form in its own right.
There are hundreds of different types of pieces within flamenco, which have generic names such as seguiriyas, soleares, alegrías, malagueñas, fandangos, zapateado, rondeña, etc.
They are defined by characteristic melodic, rhytmic, and harmonic structures; each has a characteristic mood and many are regional variants of essentially similar forms.

Each flamenco form is in a sense incomplete--an ongoing composition--with various artists sharing in its development, borrowing certain melodies (called falsettas) from the tradition while adding variations of their own and developing their own personal interpretation over years or even a lifetime.
Each artist therefore has his or her own soleares with a grab-bag of melodic variations that can be plugged in or omitted depending on the needs of the dancer or the mood of the guitarist.
Improvisation in the flamenco tradition is primarily of this sort--choosing which of the pre-composed melodies to use and what sequence to use them in.

 Bulerias
This is a cross between Soleares en Bulerías: faster than Soleares and slower than Bulerías, less deep than Soleares and more serious than Bulerías.
This makes it sound as if it is a lot slower than Soleares, while in fact the tempo may be higher, nevertheless giving a more tranquil impression.
Some people say the Seguiryias has five counts, but they are being silly: they only count the accents, and think of them as counts, but counts are regular by definition, these accents are not.

Anyway, we have learned something from an interesting lecture on Gaudi that evening (which was equally disturbed by the good mood of some of the participants).

For example, names such as soleares, bulerias, alegrias, and tientos are not specific titles of fixed pieces, but rather musical forms with associated meters, rhythmic patterns, tempos, harmonies, and other characteristics.
In bulerias, for example, the basic compas is the same as in soleares (accents on beats 3, 6, 8, 10, and 12), but there may also be a secondary compas with accents on 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 11.

The flamenco guitar solo, which masters like Ramon Montoya pioneered, marks an important step in this evolution.Whatever the purist aficionado may think, few impartial listeners will deny that in the hands of a player of  Jose Motos' gifts, the solo guitar suite justifies its existence.
Without gypsy feeling the most brilliant technician cannot handle the soleares or seguidillias.  Jose Motos' seguidillias (which he considers to be the most successful tracks on this record) are a triumph.  He is a man of great talent who, at the age of 28, has a long and brilliant career before him."
Motos lacked the commercial flair which brought such success to Carlos Montoya and Sabicas; he was unsuccessful in his efforts to establish his own flamenco troupe.
