Solesmes is a Benedictine Abbey, not far from Le Mans, in France, which was restored by Dom Guéranger, after the troubles of the French Revolution, in the early part of last century.
Thus the monks of Solesmes, having printed the first-fruits of their labours, the Graduale Romanum, simply for the private use of the French Benedictine Congregation, were soon to enjoy seeing their work blessed, fully approved by Rome, and made the official edition of the Gradual for the whole Church.
The Solesmes theory of Gregorian rhythm and its expression in chant books with rhythmic signs was soon accepted and blessed by the Church as a practical aid to the singing of her Chant.

In 1837 Dom Guéranger was professed at Rome and a few months later Pope Gregory XVI raised Solesmes to the rank of an abbey, naming Dom Guéranger first abbot and formally erecting at the same time the new "Congregation of France" with Solesmes as the mother-house and its abbot as superior-general.
The community of Solesmes has achieved a worldwide reputation for its erudition and its devotion to monastic and liturgical studies, the foundation for which was laid by Dom Guéranger himself.
But the greatest work, perhaps, done by the monks of Solesmes, and that for which they are best known, has been the restoration of the true Gregorian chant of the Church.

On 11 July, 1833, five priests came together in the restored priory at Solesmes, and on 15 August, 1836, publicly declared their intention of consecrating their lives to the re-establishment of the Order of St. Benedict.
Dom Guéranger was appointed Abbot of Solesmes (Oct. 31) and Superior General of the Benedictines of the "Congrégation de France", and those of the little society who had received the habit 15 August, 1836, made their solemn profession under the direction of the new abbot, who had pronounced his vows at Rome, 26 July, 1837.
Amongst those who came to Solesmes, either to follow the monastic life or to seek self-improvement by means of retreats, Dom Guéranger found many collaborators and valuable steadfast friends.

The manuscripts were considered to be the most representative and would serve as basis for the so-called 'critical' edition of the Graduale Romanum.
Solesmes scholars had already divided the manuscripts into different families earlier on, albeit rather by intuition than by following any scientific approach.
Just compare the recordings of the same antiphon by the Solesmes choir : one under the direction of Dom Gajard (before Cardine) and the other lead by Dom Claire (after Cardine).
