Solid-Axle Suspension - History & Technical Specs - Rod and Custom Magazine
I-beam axles are either cast or forged, so they have a porous surface that can be more difficult to chrome without leaving nickel shadows in the channel that runs down the center of the axle.
This worked great with the dropped I-beam axles that were available at the time, because the radius rods allowed the axle to move up and down and the flexibility of the I-beam allowed the axle to twist slightly when necessary to accommodate strange torsion loads going up driveways or over speed bumps.
With a dropped axle, split wishbones, and a stock or F-100 steering box in place, the rod that runs from the pitman arm to the spindle (called a drag link) was forced to operate at an unusual angle due to the geometry change.

The greatest advantage of a solid axle is its increased articulation, and improved amount of wheel travel.
The solid axle conversion kit is ideally suited for individuals who want to replace their IFS front suspension with a solid axle.
It is important to remember that the solid axle kits will increase your ride height dramatically, causing a high center of gravity and usually slower stopping times due to increased tire sizes.

Beam axle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A beam axle is a suspension system, also called a solid axle, in which one set of wheels is connected laterally by a single beam or shaft.
A live axle is a type of beam axle in which the shaft (or shafts, since live axles, while connected to move as a single unit, are seldom one piece) also transmits power to the wheels; a beam axle that does not also transmit power is sometimes called a dead axle.
A type of beam axle is the torsion beam axle, in which the beam axle also functions as an anti-roll bar to control the lateral motion of the body.

Live axle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A live axle is a type of beam axle suspension system that uses the driveshafts that transmit power to the wheels to connect the wheels laterally so that they move together as a unit.
A live axle consists of a central differential mated to tubes containing the driveshafts that connect the differential to the driven wheels.
As with any beam axle, the advantages of the live axle are relative simplicity, lower manufacturing costs, lighter overall vehicle weight, and the fact that the axle and suspension systems take up little or no interior volume.

1985 was the first year Toyota put fuel injection on their trucks and 4Runners, and the last year they came with a solid axle in front, instead of the independent suspension used on the 1986 and never ones.
The axle was shoved into place, and the jacks supporting the frame and axle were used to align it with the center pins of the springs.
To hook up the brake lines, I used the hard line that was attached to the calipers on the IFS, the brackets that mounted to the backing plates of the factory solid axle, and a pair of braided stainless steel brake hoses, also purchased from Kong's 4x4.

By forcing the axle to move in a lateral arc with the panhard you can remove or reduce bumpsteer if you can get the arcs of the panhard and the draglink to coincide.
