Solid modeling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solid modeling (or modelling) is the unambiguous representation of the solid parts of an object, that is, models of solid objects suitable for computer processing.
A solid model generally consists of a group of features, added one at a time, until the model is complete.
The modeling of solids is only the minimum requirement of a CAD system’s capabilities.

 solid modelling systems
Solid modellers have the advantage of being easier to understand since they often only involve working with a single class of object - the solid.
Solid modellers are not very satisfactory at handling complex geometries with free-form, sculptured surfaces.
Hybrid modellers are being developed that offer the speed and ease of use associated with solid modelling, together with the power and design flexibility of surface modelling.

Solid modelling is a rapidly growing area of research and development in the CAD domain.
A number of computer models are used to simulate the development of prototypical forms that are then evaluated on the basis of their performance in a simulated environment.
Among the three solid modelling representation methods mentioned in section 2, CSG tree is highly recommended in generative design systems because of its conciseness and easiness for genetic encoding.

"Solid And Surface Modelling Software - Delcam International Inc. - 04/03 "
Version 5 of PowerShape hybrid modelling software incorporates enhancements to both the solid modelling and surfaces modelling capabilities, including whole model editing by morphing, direct editing of a single face of a solid and associative 3D sketching of curves onto surfaces.
It allows whole areas of a solid to be stretched, twisted or otherwise distorted without disconnecting its faces, then recorded as a new feature in the history tree.
When the edge is moved to its new position, the remainder of the solid will reshape, which is said to ensure a smooth transition across all the faces that are affected.

Solids can also be created by combining surfaces, which often have complex shapes, through a sewing operation.
There are many uses for this type of modelling including testing various sizes of parts to determine which is the "best" part by simply adjusting the model parameters and regenerating the part.
Parametric modelling is most efficient working with designs which only undergo dimensional changes rather than gross geometric ones such as removal of a feature.

Meanwhile, rendered images of the completed 3D model were produced using the in-built visualisation facilities in Solid Edge and sent to the marketing department for use in the first publicity leaflets for the Cassius.
Solid Edge was used to produce accurate IGES files of the appropriate parts, which were then transmitted as Zip files, along with some critical dimensions, via the Internet to China.
Solid Edge was also used to create hidden-line-removed drawings from the 3D models, which were then imported into Microsoft Word for inclusion in the technical and user support documentation, saving the time and cost of having illustrations produced independently.

MCAD Online - Parametric Modelling history
His goal was to develop a modelling system using features and parameters, a method of linking dimensions and variables to geometry in such a way that when the parameter values change, the geometry updates accordingly.
The surface and solid modelling tools that followed from the late 1970s to the late 1980s extended the drafting paradigm by allowing engineers and designers to draw lines in 3D space.
Assembly modelling was a natural extension of the parametric modelling concept that essentially provided the same advantages to complex assemblies that the initial concept had provided to component parts.

Integration of Surface with Solid Modelling   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Another strand to the research is the integration of surface modelling with solid modelling.
However, as far as the object's manufacture and the analysis of the object's physical properties are concerned, it is necessary to be able to model the object's properties as a solid.
An important consequence is that a natural biproduct of the creation of a solid model is the generation of a mesh within the object which can be used as the basis of a finite-element analysis of its solid properties, or alternatively this physical problem may be solved in parameter space.

Creating solid models is a critical function for all mining professionals - you need to know that you can complete a complex wireframing task with minimal fuss and be able to produce a shape that truly honours the data you began with.
Solids modelling is often difficult - we never quite have enough data and need to resolve missing data points in three dimensions with simply a mouse and a flat screen.
With Surpac Vision solid modelling tools, you will be working in an integrated three dimensional editing window with full control over the level of detail you have displayed on points, lines and triangulated surfaces.

 Solid modelling and building reconstruction
Having in mind the properties of the solid modelling schemes described in the previous sections, we now want to consider their applicability for building reconstruction.
As primitives can be combined in order to model more complex buildings, the number of primitives required is considerably reduced with respect to the primitive instancing scheme described in section 2.3.3.
In contrast to CSG primitives, boundary models are guaranteed to be easily transferable to many other programs, which is another reason for the wide range of applications of this modelling technique, especially in CAD.

Solid Edge offers an extremely capable 2D drafting module - Solid Edge/Draft - which is available separately from the full 3D solid modelling product.
But perhaps the most surprising benefit so far is that, although they can readily import their legacy 2D drawings into Solid Edge, more often than not it is proving quicker to model a part from scratch in Solid Edge and to then produce the required 2D drawings automatically from the 3D model.
It now sees 3D solid modelling as the way forward for all its design and drafting work in future in order to keep it a world leader.

A first issue to tackle is solid modeling, by which is meant the computer representation and manipulation of 3D shapes.

A Model Representation for Solid Modelling in a Virtual Reality Environment
One of the most important reasons is the absence of a suitable model representation that can efficiently support solid modelling in a virtual reality environment.

Constraints are embedded in the solid model and are organized at different levels to reflect the process of solid modelling.
