BBC NEWS | Europe | Analysis: Solidarity's legacy
Solidarity blatantly contradicted the Soviet principle that every aspect of public life had to be animated and controlled by the Communist Party.
Solidarity saw itself as driving a moral revolution: an end to the mutual suspicion, self-abasement, double-talk, influence-peddling and corruption of life under communism.
On 25 August, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, a veteran Catholic newspaper editor and Solidarity adviser, was sworn in as prime minister.

  Lech Walesa hero file
Solidarity is officially formed in September and recognised by the government in October, becoming the country's first legally recognised independent trade union since the end of the Second World War.
Solidarity is legalised, a senate is reintroduced to the parliament with the power to veto decisions by the Sejm (lower house), the office of president of Poland is created, and Solidarity is allowed to run candidates in free elections for a limited number of parliamentary seats.
When Walesa refuses to allow Solidarity to become the minor party in a coalition with the communists, the parliament is forced to accept a Solidarity-led government committed to dismantling the communist system and replacing it with a Western-style democracy and a free-market economy.

By the end of 1982, the Solidarity movement had died down enough for Wałęsa to be released from prison and for martial law to be lifted.
During the mid-1980s, Solidarity persisted as an underground organization supported by the Catholic Church, and by the late 1980s it was again a major force in Poland.
Solidarity has since placed greater emphasis on traditional trade union matters, but the political bloc Solidarity Electoral Action, an outgrowth of the union founded in 1996, governed Poland from 1997 to 2001.

History of Solidarity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solidarity gave rise to a broad anti-communist nonviolent social movement that, at its height, united some 10 million members and vastly contributed to the fall of communism.
Solidarity's example led to the spread of anti-communist ideas and movements throughout the countries of the Eastern Bloc, weakening their communist governments; a process that eventually culminated in the Revolutions of 1989 (the "Autumn of Nations").
In the 1970s and 1980s, the initial success of Solidarity in particular, and of dissident movements in general, was fed by a deepening crisis within Soviet-style societies brought about by declining morale, worsening economic conditions (a shortage economy), and the growing stresses of the Cold War.

Another component of Solidarity's leadership was a group of intellectuals who had been active in KOR (the Committee for the Defence of the Workers), an organisation that had carried out solidarity with workers' struggles during the 1970s.
But by the time Solidarity was formed, Kuron had modified his ideas, replacing the perspective of revolutionary overthrow of the Stalinist bureaucracy with one of gradually reforming the state under pressure from mass organisations and struggles.
The crushing of Solidarity by a “Communist” government was used by capitalist politicians in the West as an example of the “evils” of socialism, and therefore helped them sell their reactionary policies.

The ILWU Story - International Solidarity
ILWU policies and actions on foreign affairs have always been built on the belief that international labor solidarity and world peace are the cornerstones of social and economic justice for all workers, including the membership of the ILWU.
The ILWU's commitment to peace and solidarity has also meant that the union has been deeply involved in the fight to protect and expand labor rights, particularly in countries threatened by the globalization of the world economy and privatization of major industries, including ports and other transportation facilities.
Trade union solidarity throughout this area was important to the ILWU in North America, and to IWLU members in Hawaii.
