Solifugae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solifugae also have long pedipalps, which function as sense organs similar to insects' antennae and give the appearance of the two extra legs.
Solifugae are carnivorous or omnivorous, with most species feeding on termites, darkling beetles, and other small arthropods.
Solifugae are the subject of many myths and exaggerations about their size, speed, behaviour, appetite, and lethality.

 Camel Spider - Uncyclopedia
It is considered to be the most poisonous spider of the world and has been known to have been the cause of the death of Scientologist Bill Bixby and attempted assassin of Hillary Clinton.
Solifugae differ from true spiders (Arachnidae) by storing their poison in two huge testicles and injecting it using a modified exo-skeletal penis.
As indicated by their name, Solifugae are mostly nocturnal, and spend their days regurgitating the live prey they keep in their leg sacks.

There is a large number of arachnid species in UAE but perhaps none has more respect in the popular imagination as the solifugae, or camel spider.
Prey is held between the forceps of the Chelicerae and chewed with such vigour that a solifugae eating a beetle can be heard over a distance of several metres.
Food supply may be the problem as fresh mincemeat dancing on the end of a length of cotton does not deceive a self-respecting camel spider indefinitely.

 Gordon's Kluwer Academic Review Page
Generally speaking this is a well presented and well written, readable yet scholarly account of all that is known of the biology of the solifugae.
It reflects and is enlightened by, as are all good monographs, the years of dedication and love expended by the author in gathering the expertise necessary to write the book.
This is continued in chapter 3 on neurobiology which also makes a good general case for a greater understanding of the importance of neurobiology in understanding behaviour.

Beginning with an introduction to Solifugae, this work covers folklore surrounding this group, functional anatomy and physiology, life history, ecology, behavior, phylogeny, biogeography and taxonomy, as well as field techniques and laboratory rearing methods.
Extensive coverage is also devoted to natural history, habitat preference, diet composition, dispersion patterns, mating and hunting behavior, and burrowing activities, as well as diel/seasonal patterns of activity.
The book also discusses the biology of Solifugae in relation to other major groups of arachnids and points out the importance of solifuges to desert communities.

Also called "Sun-Spiders" (though this seems inappropriate, since the term "solifugid" means "sun-fleeing", and see below their typical habits), the Solifugae constitute a separate Order (within the Class Arachnid) from either Spiders or Scorpions (which they considerably resemble).
The 12,000+ species of the Solifugae Order have a flexible abdomen that narrows where it joins the three-sectioned cephalothorax, and a head with a pair of small eyes.
Solifugae use these pedipalps, which are equiped with suction pads, to grasp the small vertebrates and arthropods which are their prey..
