  The Dodo Family Secrets
Their analysis shows the dodo and the solitaire to be close relatives, with their nearest living relative the Nicobar pigeon Caloenas nicobarica from the Nicobar Islands and nearby south-east Asia.
The dodo was a flightless bird, bigger than a turkey, living on Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.
By comparing these pieces with the DNA of living birds, the scientists were able to deduce when the dodo evolved away from its relatives into a separate entity.

The Dodo was really a pigeon
A DNA test on the mummified bird that helped to inspire Alice in Wonderland has revealed that the dodo was actually a pigeon.
Both birds were so heavily modified for their island habitats that it is difficult to determine their evolutionary history simply by looking at their shape and their bones.
Now DNA analyses of these birds have confirmed that the dodo and the solitaire are part of the pigeon family.

Description of the Dodo bird (raphus cucullatus)
The dodo was a large, plump bird covered in soft, grey feathers, with a plume of white at its tail.
Because it was flightless, those who saw the bird often thought it had no real wings at all, describing them as "little winglets." Study of the skeleton reveals, however, that the dodo did in fact have wings that were simply not used for flight, much like penguins' wings.
The interference of the foreign animals coupled with the continued overuse of the birds for food led to its total extinction by 1693.

An old account reported that the bill of the Reunion Solitaire was "like that of a Woodcock, but larger", leading to the suggestion that the Reunion Solitaire might have been an ibis, although it was thought to have been flightless, and the fossil ibis bones do not indicate flightless ness.
This bird was apparently a flightless ibis closely related to the Sacred Ibis of Africa, though early travellers who reported the "solitaire" did not mention an ibis at all.
Two (also extinct) nearest relatives of the Rodrigues solitaire which lived also on the Mascarenes, were the Rodriguez Solitaire (Pezophaps solitaria) which lived on the island Réunion and the famous dodo (Raphus cucullatus) which lived on the island Mauritius.

Built to live in the high Rocky Mountains, this bird is very happy and healthy in the cold and snowy McKean Co. winter.
We were pleased to discover that the bird is in immaculately fresh plumage, which indicates that the bird is eating well, even in the extreme cold.
This suggests that this bird did not just show up in McKean County recently after a substantial amount of wandering, which would wear down its new feathers, but more likely has been present since the fall and has molted into its current plumage right there in SGL 30 or somewhere close by.

The sad story of its extinction raised the bird to mythological status, making it the avian equivalent of the great Greek warrior and hero of Homer's Iliad, Achilles, who was killed in the Trojan War when Paris wounded him in the heel, his one vulnerable spot.
It is a murky affair, with some scholars classifying it as part of the family of preying birds such as the falcon, hawk and eagle, while others holding it as from the family of flat-breast-boned ratities such as the ostrich, emu and rhea.
The dodo and the solitaire themselves separated in the late Oligocene period, or 26 Ma.

a flightless forest-dwelling bird of Mauritius, extinct since the late 17th cent.
The dodo was closely related to the two species of solitaire bird, extinct flightless giants found on the other islands in the Mascarene Islands.
Although the bird’s flesh was tough and unpalatable, European sailors and the pigs and rats they brought to Mauritius slaughtered the birds and destroyed its eggs, and it became extinct in roughly 50 years.
