Solnhofen Basin - EvoWiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Solnhofen limestones are restricted in occurrence to the Southern Franconian Alb, in Bavaria, cut by the Althmuhl and Danube Rivers, north of Munich.
To the east, the Solnhofen region was bordered by the London-Brabant Massif and the Central German Swell, and to the west by the Bohemian Massif.
The paleoclimate of Solnhofen was arid, and monsoonal, with monsoon winds rising from the southeast and bringing in influxes of fresh water to the lagoon, which probably balanced the salinity of the lagoon, precipitating a seasonal migration thereto of nektonic forms and microbenthos.

Solnhofen limestone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Solnhofen limestone is a Jurassic lagerstätte that preserves a rare assemblage of fossilized organisms, some of which, such as sea jellies, don't ordinarily fossilize at all.
The Solnhofen beds lie in the German state of Bavaria, halfway between Nuremberg and Munich.
The fine-grained texture of the mud silt forming the limestone from the Solnhofen area is ideal for making lithographic plates, and extensive quarrying in the 19th century revealed many fossil finds, as commemorated in the name Archaeopteryx lithographica, all the specimens of which come from these deposits.

During late Jurassic times, this was an archipelago at the edge of the Tethys Sea, which included placid lagoons that had limited access to the open sea, where salinity rose high enough that the resulting brine could not support life.

"This fine-textured limestone was quarried near Solnhofen and Eichstatt in the Altmuhl Valley, Bavaria, for many generations and sent to all parts of the world for use in the preparation of lithographic prints which played such an important role in the first publication of books.
The discovery of Archaeopteryx settled the long-debated question on the origin and relationships of birds, for it is now clear that they arose from a primitive group of diapsid reptiles, a group that would also include the ancestry of the dinosaurs and phytosaurs" (Stirton 1959, pp.

The Solnhofen Lithographic Limestone was deposited in the Tithonian age of the Jurassic period, in a small lagoon where water exchange was restricted from the open sea due to an extended platform of shallow water and strong seafloor relief.
Aragonite is not preserved in the Solnhofen Lithographic Limestone, with the ammonites being deformed and reduced to periostracal films, presumably in the upper levels of the water column, as these are more commonly preserved in slump sediments.

Studies of the lithology and types of fossils preserved provides evidence that is used to interpret the geologic age of the formation and the ancient environmental conditions under which it formed.
Evidence gathered from regional studies indicates that the Solnhofen and other equivalent rocks in the region were formed in a series of lagoons and islands on the edge of a low latitude, warm, widespread sea, which covered much of Europe during Late Jurassic time.

Named after the Bavarian town where many of these fossils were unearthed, Solnhofen deposits are the remains from a shallow Jurassic sea that covered what would, 150 million years later, become central Europe.
This sea had pockets of high salinity lagoons which, when combined with the soft carbonate mud on the sea bed, acted to preserve many organic remains that would otherwise have suffered rapid decomposition.
Over time, the fossil-bearing mud became limestone and was quarried by paleo-European, Celtic, and Germanic peoples inhabiting the area.

The Solnhofen Limestone is a lithographic limestone quarried in Germany because of its fine grained characteristics.
Based on the odd behavior recorded by some marine organisms (e.g., horseshoe crabs running around in circles and then dying, preserving both the trackway and the body fossil), and the level of preservation, it has been suggested that the Solnhofen was deposited in an anoxic environment.
