Solo Violin Partita No. 2 (Bach) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Partita in D minor for solo violin (BWV 1004) by Johann Sebastian Bach was written in the period 1717–1723 and is said to have been dedicated to the memory of Bach's first wife, Maria Barbara Bach.
Ciaccona is considered a pinnacle in the solo violin repertoire covering almost every aspect of violin playing known during Bach's time and thus it is among the most difficult pieces to play on any instrument.
The Ciaccona has been primarily recorded as part of the complete solo violin sonatas and partitas collection by Bach.

 Bach - segment 14
Bach wrote a set of six multi-movement works for solo violin, most likely during his years in Cöthen: three are sonatas and three are partitas (another name for suite, or collection of dances).
Many of Bach's so-called lute works are in fact arrangements of cello or violin works, but one which seems to be originally for lute is the suite in E minor, BWV 996, which one manuscript identifies as being intended for lute-harpsichord.
Even today the number of high-quality concert works for solo violin, or solo cello, or solo flute is surprisingly small, and as a result Bach's works remain cornerstones in the solo literature for these instruments.

A fugue in G minor for violin and harpsichord, BWV 1025, is all that survives from this second Weimar period to shed light on his development as a violinist, and it indicates the emergence of a performing technique wholly in keeping with what we find in the sonatas and partitas.
Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1003-1006
Bach soon left Weimar; records document that he was paid for only two three-month periods, which puts his departure in June of 1703, and he had a new post as organist at the New Church in Arnstadt, about 20 miles southwest of Weimar, by August.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Chaconne from Partita #2 in D minor for Solo Violin
One of the best known examples is the chaconne from the Violin Partita in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach (the bass line is not always present in this work, but it is strongly implied).
Bach's Goldberg Variations are also frequently reckoned to be a chaconne, although Bach did not explicitly label them as such.

Chaconne from Partita No. 2 for Solo Violin in D minor, BWV 1004
Bach composed six multi-movement works for unaccompanied violin: three are titled "sonata" and three are "partita." Each of the sonatas begins with a slow movement, then has a fugue as the second movement–a challenge for the performer, who must make each of the necessary individual lines speak on this single instrument with only four strings.

CD Baby: GARRETT FISCHBACH: J.S. Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo
After listening to Garrett Fischbach's newly released 2 CD recording of the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin several times, it has now become my favorite recording of these masterpieces by Bach.
Indeed, Bach himself used a number of the movements in other works in just such a fashion, but The Three Sonatas and Three Partitas for solo violin should remain unaccompanied, for when they are performed properly, no harmonic element is truly missing.
Bach utilizes nine different dance forms, and although his dances retain the outer elements of the traditional stylized forms, there is no evidence either musical or historical to suggest they were actually danced to, rather these dances are purely musical in their construction and intent.

Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin stand apart in the composer's work, as well as in the entire repertoire of violin music.
Bach was himself an excellent violinist, in addition to being a virtuoso organist and harpsichordist, and these works are indeed very difficult, both in the actual playing as well as the nuances of phrasing that need to be applied.
One of Bach's most memorable fugues appears in the first sonata in G minor; this fugue, originally written for organ, is a masterpiece of simplicity and complexity combined.

Though Bach wrote these works for the violin - he for a fact did not have the benefit of the modern violin's metallic strings and superior bow- both of which contributes greatly to the more vigorous sonic character of the modern instrument.
It is as it were, Bach was himself humbled by the greatness of his creator, amazed by the notes that flew from his hands.
Though the entire CD is of consistently good sound, the violin tone in the Second Partita is apparently more luscious and resonant.

This partita is essentially reflection of the death of his wife whose name is woven into many of the motives (that is the reason for the double d at the beginning of the Allemande) and the c major is perhaps an expression of his own release from grief, redemption or whatever.
