I believe the initial research was well done however a recent video of folk dance was poorly done not only had the dances lost their original flavour, several dances were mislabelled and the costuming was overstagified.
Solo interpretation of music with emphasis on hip and torso; use of isolation; often improvisational; styles vary between regions and also in technical emphasis from the loose informal beledi to classical oriental(e).
NB I have not included "gypsy" dance (apart from specifically the Ghawâzî) as it is subject to even more of a fantasy cult than "belly dance".

Bee Palmer danced the Shimmy to the song 'Shimmee' (by Shelton Brooks) in the summer of 1918 in Ziegfeld's Midnight Frolics.
The Shimmy believe it or not, actually became a couples dance in the 1930's, however it is mainly a solo dance that is still popular today, although it is not really considered a dance anymore, but a dance movement.
In the late 1950's a dance called the Freeze became popular and was easy to do, you struck a pose and made your whole body quiver and shake like the shimmy.

Solo dance should be included at worlds, it would give more people more opportunity of making it.

I think that group dances are common for the folkloric dances of the Middle East, even cane and other prop styles, but no so much with belly dance.
I think one thing that needs to be kept in mind about group belly dance is that it must always fall to the level of the person with the least ability if it is to be synchronized the way that western dancers usually do.
I have seen group dances that were well done and interesting, but they never have the emotional impact on me that the solo dances do.

Unfortunately, some of the songs are also cheesy--this isn't the fault of the soundtrack itself, since these songs are in the game, but they did carry over onto the soundtrack.
While the "Solo" series isn't as good as the original DDR series this CD does have great songs all the way around with a good change from the traditional DDR repeat "on ever mix" songs that we're used to.
