Solomon Cutner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solomon Cutner (6 August 1902 - 2 February 1988) was a precocious British pianist.
Known almost universally in the musical industry by his first name, Solomon was born the seventh son of a seventh son in the East End of London and gave his first concerts in 1912 at the age of ten.
Known especially for his Beethoven, which has an almost legendary status, he was in the midst of completing a complete cycle of the sonatas for EMI when he was stricken by a stroke in 1956, which rendered him almost completely paralyzed for the rest of his life.

Solomon was only 27 when he made his first recordings for the Columbia company in 1929.
A contemporary review of this recording of the Tchaikovsky concerto referred to Solomon’s ‘kindly skill’ stating that "I have often declared that for vulgar music a vulgar player is the only one to be considered; and Solomon is not vulgar." This is unfair, because the performance is deliberately not extrovert.
Solomon recorded the Tchaikovsky Concerto again in 1949 for HMV, his recording company from 1942 until the tragically early end of his career, due to a stroke, in 1956.

Entitled Solomon: Concert Recordings I, this fine disc promises to be the first of several dedicated to the art of Solomon Cutner (1902-1988), whose tragic tale of a brilliant career shattered by illness is all too familiar.
The Beethoven, from December 18, 1952, marks Solomon's only appearance at the Concertgebouw, in a radio performance that has been included on a Q-Disc set from Philips (97015) and is now remastered in even quieter sound for APR by Bryan Crimp.
Solomon obviously enjoyed working with Eduard van Beinum: the entire approach is relaxed and secure, with Solomon's opting for a hybrid cadenza that eschews pure bravura in favor of splicing a bit of Clara Schumann with his own improvisation on the percussive last beats of the opening theme.

Solomon was the kind of pianist who was particularly in critical favour when I started to get to know classical music back in the 1950's.
The virtues that are to be found in Solomon's playing are largely associated with the quality of restraint, and his special admirers found in it a degree of inwardness, eloquence etc that it seems that the Almighty, with exemplary British fairness, had denied to players with more spectacular executant abilities.
There is a lot I also admire and enjoy in Solomon's playing of these concertos, and I grant that he is guiltless of anything in the way of special showiness or excitement.

Lest you associate "grace" and "aristocratic" with brittle, small-scale playing, be advised that Solomon's energetic playing and his unerring choice of tempo and dynamic relationships fully convey the power and beauty of these great works.
I must say that the way Solomon plays the first movement of the moonlight sonata is fantastic: it is played slowly (like written on the partition) without ever beeing boring.
Feeding the legend too is the fact that Solomon suffered a stroke that prevented him ever playing again soon after some of these recordings were made.

This CD contains legendary performances by English pianist Solomon (his full name was Solomon Cutner, but he always simply went by his first name; some references say his name was Cutner Solomon, but that's incorrect) and in particular Brahms's 'Variations on a Theme by Handel' has assumed legendary status among pianists.
First, Solomon plays each variation according to its own characteristics, not attempting to give the overall set a specific sound; others tend to homogenize the individual variations where Solomon gives each its own approach.
Second, until the accelerating variation that leads into the concluding fugue, the dynamic level is fairly soft, or at least not much above mezzo-forte, and always elegant.
