In Solomon Kane's saga, instead, the ethnocentric comments of the author seem totally gratuitous, the setting of the stories is unverisimilar, and half of the time one doesn't understand why the character acts like he does.
Kane is in the ancient British and Irish tradition of a man who goes forth to wander the world after he receives the call- guided solely by his deep inner trust in his God.
Kane is a Puritan in the original sense of the word, a single individual that has no tolerance for corruption whether it exists in the World- or the Church.

Solomon Kane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solomon Kane is a fictional character created by the pulp-era writer Robert E. Howard.
A 16th century Puritan, Solomon Kane is a somber looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms.
Solomon Kane, however, lives in a much more modern world (the sixteenth century) and is exceptionally dedicated to the cause of good.

Nonetheless, Kane manages to triumph and the apparition, before it flees, tells him a terrible secret, one which leads Kane to see that justice is done...entirely fitting justice that would have made E.C.'s Crypt Keeper proud (heh, heh.
The old man proceeds to give Kane an extensive and tedious history of the city, one which acts like one hell of a speed bump in the otherwise smooth flow of the narrative.

Solomon Kane claims to follow a tightly Puritan code of conduct, but in reality his personal ethics resemble those of a latter-day "knight in shining armor:" he tries to defend the weak and helpless (especially women), finds it necessary to fight evil wherever he finds it, and follows a life of some asceticism.
The Staff of Solomon was proof against supernatural terrors, frequently killing with one blow a creature otherwise immune to physical damage; it's mere touch was enough to destroy the monsters.
Solomon Kane was active during the late 1500's, and would make an interesting character to introduce in games set in that period.

Kane is often described as a fanatic, and although this term tends to bring up images of wild-eyed screaming zealots, it does fit him to a certain degree.
For the most part, Kane has a fanatical devotion to Divine Providence, and always feels his own actions are in the right, and the proof of his righteousness is found in his successes.
First and foremost, Kane is an excellent swordsman, nicknamed by Sir Frances Drake "Devon's king of swords." His style is economical and workmanlike; with little in the way of flashy or "trick" maneuvers.

Lovecraft's influence on Howard is strongly visible in the stories of Solomon Kane; there is no end of unearthly forces, dark rituals, restless dead, and dark, bloodthirsty, and ancient gods for Kane to smite or flee from.
The atmosphere is pure gothic from beginning to end, except that unlike the traditional gothic heroine, Kane carries a sword and slays the dark host of the crumbling castle...

Solomon Kane has some interesting stories so far (not done yet since I have like three or four books going at a time) but I don't have as much of a connection to the Puritan character as with Conan.
Fantasy abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters; united with it, she is the mother of the arts and origin of marvels.
I think that Conan and Kane both have ethics, but the difference is that Kane's ethics are very rigid and preconcieved, like a knight of the round table (and because of that, he occasionally reminds me of Don Quixote, a very dangerous version).

In this way, Solomon Kane is a vigilante who very strongly and openly functions as a messianic figure in the writings of Robert E. Howard.
At this early stage in the creation of Solomon Kane, Howard tempered the religious overtones of the passage to a softer intensity by inferring that Kane may not have solidified his messianic role in his own mind with any concrete thought.
Kane speaks these words himself, fully acknowledging that the motive behind is vigilantism is a commitment to "work the will of God".

trenchman.com - Book Review: The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane by Robert E. Howard
I was immediately enthralled: Howard's writing is accessible (his prose is clean and sometimes beautifully poetic), his stories are well-crafted, and his characterization of Conan is, of course, eternally compelling (you're really missing something if you've only seen the movies).
It should be noted that despite their shared penchant for traveling the world and having action-packed adventures, Solomon Kane and Conan possess two very different personalities; Howard was not simply recycling characters here.
Whereas Conan is thoroughly amoral, and frequently expounds upon the joys of slaying for slaying's sake, Kane, in several of Howard's stories, spends months and sometimes years hunting individual murderers, whose victims are often so inconsequential as to go unnoticed by practically everyone else in society.
