Solomon Kullback - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kullback was one of the first three employees hired by William F. Friedman at the US Army's Signal Intelligence Service (SIS) in the 1930s, along with Frank Rowlett and Abraham Sinkov.
Kullback was the Chief Scientist at the NSA until his retirement in 1962, whereupon he took a position at Georgetown University.
Solomon Kullback is remembered by his colleagues at NSA as straightforward; one described him as "totally guileless, you always knew where you stood with him." One former NSA senior recalled him as a man of unlimited energy and enthusiasm and a man whose judgment was usually "sound and right."

Afterward, Kullback rediscovered a love of teaching; he began offering evening classes in math at George Washington University from 1939 on, and found a new pleasure in teaching.
Kullback recalled, "We solved them for our own amazement or amusement," but the exercise had practical consequences -- their skill kept the U.S. government from adopting insecure methods of encipherment.
Even in the midst of war, Kullback demonstrated he was a "people person." For example, in order to boost morale, he oten would come to work on the night shift to show the overnight workers they had not been forgotten.

Kullback-Leibler divergence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally introduced by Solomon Kullback and Richard Leibler in 1951 as the directed divergence between two distributions, it is not the same as a divergence in calculus: the term "divergence" for the quantity should not be allowed to mislead.
One might be tempted to call it a "distance metric", but this would also be a misnomer as the Kullback-Leibler divergence is not symmetric,
In quantum information science it can also used as a measure of entanglement in a state.
