  Solomon Schechter
Schechter's most influential contribution to American Jewish life was his popularization of the concept of a "catholic (i.e., all-embracing as opposed to denominational) Israel." This was meant to provide a theoretical basis for the continuation of the Historical movement's search for Jewish unity.
Schechter wrote with an impressive measure of expertise on the biblical, intertestamental, rabbinic, medieval and modern periods of Jewish history.
For Dr. Schechter's "Notes on Jewish Philanthropy" acknowledgment is due to Rabbi Jacob Bosniak, one of his pupils, who with devotion and skill collated the notes taken by himself and other students of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America with the notebook of the lecturer.
