Solomonid dynasty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Solomonid dynasty is the traditional royal house of Ethiopia, claming descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, who is said to have given birth to the traditional first king Menelik I after her Biblically-described visit to Solomon in Jerusalem.
The identification of Ethiopia with Biblical Sheba, and particularly the traditional accounts of the dynasty's founding are not universally acknowledged.
The dynasty, a bastion of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, came to rule Ethiopia in 1270 when Yekuno Amlak overthrew the last ruler of the Zagwe dynasty.

Emperor of Ethiopia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a result, by the mid-18th century the power of the Emperor had been largely transferred to his deputies, like Ras Mikael Sehul of Tigray, who held the actual power of the Empire and elevated or deposed Emperors at will in their struggle for control of the entire realm.
The Emperors of Ethiopia claimed their right to rule based on two claims: their descent from the kings of Axum, and their descent from the son of Solomon and Makeda, Queen of Sheba, Menelik I.
The claim to their relationship to the Kings of Axum derives from Yakuno Amlak's claim that he was the descendant of Dil Na'od, through his father, although he defeated and killed the last Zagwe king in battle.

Traditional church accounts describe the Solomonic Dynasty as descendants of the "legitimate" rulers, in contrast with the Zagwe "usurpers." In other words, church documents back the new Dynasty's claims of descent from King Solomon of Israel and the Queen of Sheba through their son Menelik, the legendary first emperor of Ethiopia.
In return for the church's support, the Solomonic rulers awarded the Ethiopian church control over vast stretches of land, which gave the church a source of wealth and power that endured until the revolution of 1974.
The founder of this new Dynasty was Yekuno Amlak (1270-1285), and some of his successors were remarkable rulers, who consolidated and extended the kingdom, or made significant contributions to religious and cultural life.

The new dynasty that Yekuno Amlak founded came to be known as the "Solomonic" dynasty because its scions claimed descent not only from Aksum but also from King Solomon of ancient Israel.
According to traditions that were eventually molded into a national epic, the lineage of Aksumite kings originated with the offspring of an alleged union between Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, whose domains Ethiopians have variously identified with parts of Southwest Arabia and/or Aksum.
Nonetheless, his assumption of the throne brought the Solomonic dynasty to power, and all subsequent Ethiopian kings traced their legitimacy to him and, thereby, to Solomon and Sheba.
