Solomons Island is on the north side of the mouth of Patuxent River, where it meets the Chesapeake Bay.
Solomons takes its name from 19th century Baltimore businessman Isaac Solomon, who established a cannery there shortly after the Civil War.
Solomons was a rather isolated boat-building town housing the University of Md. Chesapeake biological research laboratory, until 1970 when a Patuxent River bridge was built, which made the town more accessible.

From 1942-1945, ATB Solomons, which encompassed 97 acres on the Dowell peninsula, trained over 65,000 servicemen for landings in both the Pacific and Atlantic theatres of war.
