		Israel's Soltam Ltd., based in Yokneam, has teamed with Urals Transmash in Russia to compete for an Indian bid to supply and produce self-propelled artillery for the Indian army.
		Soltam is offering a self-propelled gun howitzer based on the Slammer, a model rejected by the Israeli army for lack of funds.
		The Soltam artillery is to be placed on the chassis of a T-72 tank, a staple of the Indian army.

	155mm M-46 Field Howitzer
		This was indeed surprising, as during demonstration trials by Soltam at Pokhran, Rajasthan in 1997-98, one M-46 field howitzer upgraded to the 155mm/45-calibre standard was successfully test-fired using extended range base-bleed ammunition out to a range of 39 km.
		Moshe Charash, Soltam's President - in an interview to Jane's Defence Weekly in February 2004 - stated that the problems with the upgrade program were successfully resolved.
		Soltam was expected to provide kits to further retrofit 220 to 250 guns locally.

		Soltam Systems Ltd. won a $47.5 million contract to upgrade 180 artillery pieces of the Indian Army following a tender process which lasted six years and involved competition from French, Swedish, Czech an South African companies.
		According to the contract, Soltam will upgrade Russian-made M-46 130 mm field artillery pieces into 155 mm guns similar to the ones used by the Israel Defense Forces.
		India is one of the largest users of 130 mm artillery in the world and it was agreed that if the option for further upgrades is implemented, Soltam will cooperate with local Indian industry in the upgrades and transfer know-how for the building of gun-tubes there.
