The Transylvanian plateau, 300 to 500 metres (1,000-1,600 feet) high, is drained by the Mureş river, the Someş river, Criş rivers, Olt river and other tributaries of the Danube.
In December 1918 the Romanian army was stationed on Mures river, but crossed the demarcation zone and advanced up to Cluj and then up to Sighetu Marmatiei, after making a request to the Powers of Versailles on the grounds of protecting the Romanians in Transylvania.
The Hungarian Army began the offensive in Transylvania in April 1919 along the Somes, Körös, and Mures rivers.
