★ Reviews of books about Franklin
Dawn, the title character, is a beautiful young woman, the granddaughter of the narrator's landlady, with whom the narrator is quite taken.
What she does, however, is orchestrate a meeting between Dawn, and a young man of her acquaintance, who is very like herself, and whom she is absolutely convinced is the only man for Dawn, so by proxy, she in a sense, seduces Dawn.
So all the while the narrator is endlessly amusing herself over the silliness of the local election, and sharing her disdain with Dawn, whom she considers superior to the "everyday folk" that populate Noonoon, she is herself engaging in her own silly subterfuge, and blithely unaware of the self-serving motive behind her orchestrations.

  English Folk Song Bibliography
Some effort has been made here to separate approaches to folk song and balladry which have wide application and methodological importance (Section 4.1); studies which concentrate especially on the music of folk songs and ballads (Section 4.2); and studies of particular, selected songs and ballads, including material on the Robin Hood ballads (Section 4.3).
Folk song and ballad studies have drawn on the resources of a wide range of disciplines such as literary and historical scholarship, oral and textual theory, folklore, ethnology, and ethnomusicology.
Some effort has been made here to select representative items of interest for the study of English song traditions in particular, and as a result ballad research at large is again substantially under-represented.

At the Edge: Paganism in British Folk Customs
Yet, in their varying ways, these and other 'folk beliefs' reflect the wide spectrum of belief and disbelief in what is easily dismissed as 'superstition'.
In the less-educated popular minds some of this spilled over but a complex syncretism of magic and respect for the Christian concept of the Devil provided a system of superstitions which, for want of a better term, is usually described as ‘pagan’.
