Punk rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Punk rock was also a reaction against certain tendencies that had overtaken popular music in the 1970s, including what the punks saw as superficial "disco" music and grandiose forms of heavy metal, progressive rock and "arena rock." Punk also rejected the remnants of the hippie counterculture of the 1960s.
Punk bands and fans were often accused of nihilism, reflexive anarchism, wilful stupidity, hooliganism, and of outrageous behavior and dress that existed merely for shock value.
Some of the furore over punk was caused by the behavior of the fans at shows, which often appeared to the uninitiated to be more of a small-scale riot than a music concert.

 Encyclopedia: Fugazi (band)
After the seminal hardcore punk group Minor Threat dissolved, Ian MacKaye (vocals and guitar) was active with a few mostly short-lived groups, (notably early emo-core band, Embrace) before forming a new trio, Fugazi, with drummer Brendan Canty (of Rites of Spring) and bass guitarist Joe Lally.
Fugazi blend elements of punk rock, hardcore soul and noise with an inventively syncopated rhythm section often steeped in dub or reggae influence.
Fugazi are currently on what the band describes as a "hiatus," partly brought on by the recent forays into fatherhood by Canty and Lally, and may or may not reunite in the future.

 Punk rock
Punk rock (from 'punk', meaning rotten, worthless) was originally used to describe the primitive guitar based rock and roll of '60s bands such as The Seeds[?], and later Detroit bands The Stooges and MC5.
The roots of punk rock lie in the earlier form of "punk", as well as the UK pub rock scene, glam rock groups such as The New York Dolls and the early driving forces of the avant garde new wave music, such as Patti Smith.
Also of importance was a desire to return to the simplicity of early rock and roll and a rejection of what punk rockers saw as the pretension, commercialism and pomposity which had overtaken "arena rock" in the 1970s, spawning the grandiose forms of heavy metal and progressive rock.

Fugazi developed an experimental, unique sound that became influential on some later punk music groups.

Although the band’s name is taken from the back of Vivian’s (the punk guy with four stars nailed to his forehead) jacket on the British comedy, The Young Ones, the hints of double bass drums and the really short guitar solos show that they’re flirting with dirty metal.
Then coat it with some later GBH for good measure and you’ve got charged hair, charging guitars, frequent trips to the gutter, frequent flights and clashes with the cops, and lyrical exploration of being a fucked-up punk.

The Dec. 1 show at the Bluebird was perhaps not what punk fans regaled with myths of mid-'70s pre-punk legends Rocket from the Tombs would expect.
With the inclusion of RFTT songs later released by Pere Ubu as well as tracks previously available only as bootlegs, Monday night's show was a rare treat for '70s rock aficionados and new fans alike.
