This album is a collection of jazz standards, including one (“A Child Is Born”) that was written by the other musical genius of the Jones family, their late brother Thad.
Many will probably compare this group to other celebrated trios such as those of Bill Evans or Keith Jarrett, but each of these groups is unique and have their own particular approach to this music.
He will be deeply missed by jazz fans the world over, but it’s nice to know that there are great recordings like this one available to remember him by.

BARBRA STREISAND Someday My Prince Will Come
In the new millennium (which started on January 1, 2001, not 2000), Streisand's first recording is "Someday My Prince Will Come" (SMPWC) from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
By the time of its release, I expect the pitch bends will be gone, the weak notes will be replaced, and the awkard phrasing will be cleaned up.
When I listened to Barbra's new version of Someday My Prince Will Come (SMPWC), it immediately struck me that it was neither great nor bad, it was just somewhere in the middle.

Mobley's real moment on the album is on the next track, "Old Folks," when he doesn't have Coltrane breathing down his neck.
Mobley's soul-stationed lyricism is well-suited to his soloing here, and is for the rest of the album except, of course, on "Teo," where Coltrane takes him out again.

PRINCE PROTEGES The Time and Vanity 6 have of late taken up their benefactor's on and off again affair with the press, and at present, only Morris Day of The Time remains sanguine about bolstering his onstage persona with comments (more playful and flippant with each encounter) to the scribes and Pharisees.
It will be interesting to see where the second album takes them, as The Time were not taken seriously either until their second time around.

In 1957, the jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, inspired by an anthology of Disney tunes owned by his child, included a version of the song on the album Dave Digs Disney.
Later versions were recorded by Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, and many times by Herbie Hancock, who would use it as the basis for a virtuoso showpiece display.
The recording on the 1961 Miles Davis album Someday My Prince Will Come features a pedal point interlude between choruses that has often been imitated.

 Prince
It's stripped-down funk, and fun to listen to, but it's easy to see why Prince didn't want to release it with his name on it: mostly party songs, recorded quickly, more characteristic of a Time album than of the intelligence and emotional range usually found on a Prince album.
The only good points are the softly funky "Barcelona," which belonged on a Madhouse album, and some arranging details on "Promise/Broken" and the finale "Eternal Embrace." Even his die-hard fans will probably find this slow going, and everyone else should stay miles away.
Mae plays some lovely stuff ("Xcogitate") and the rhythm section has an admirable light touch, but as with Prince's work with Madhouse and Eric Leeds, the compositions tend to be very simple and overly repetitive (title track, where a multi-tracked Dulfer keeps stating the same theme with increasing volume).

I arranged "Someday My Prince Will Come" with Miles Davis in mind, partially because he is one of the masters of freer improvisation.
The intro is a variation of the intro to "Tout De Suite" from his Filles De Kilimanjaro album (which is one of my favorite albums to listen to while driving), and Tim plays the melody in the same register as Miles did on his album Someday My Prince Will Come.

Someday My Prince Will Come (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Someday My Prince Will Come is an album recorded in March 1961 by Miles Davis.
While the cover credits the Miles Davis Sextet, only the title track features six players, with John Coltrane joining the then-current Miles Davis Quintet, which is featured on the bulk of the record: (Davis, trumpet; Hank Mobley, tenor sax; Wynton Kelly, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; Jimmy Cobb, drums).
(This is why Jones is missing from the personnel list on the original album cover shown here.) The title track has been used for decades by Hal Jackson as the theme music for his "Hal Jackson's Sunday Morning Classics" radio show in New York on WBLS.

As fate would have it, Someday My Prince Will Come is also the last album they recorded together before Elvin Jones died in May, 2004.
Witness his breakout during “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To,” when the spry luminescence of Hank Jones’ exposition of the melody moves into a brushed solo of understated firepower that injects force, previously implicit, into the more laid-back, block chord style of his brother.
Obviously, Someday My Prince Will Come was recorded before Elvin Jones’ final illness of this year had begun, weakening him.

The Great Jazz Trio - Someday My Prince Will Come CD Review
This is a very fine jazz album that keeps things simple but never forgets that improvisation and often relentless tempos and riffs are the key.
He is noted for having excellent taste and a masterful melodic sophistication that comes across beautifully in “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise” and “A Child is Born.” Davis is accomplished bassist, having played with Sarah Vaughn, Frank Sinatra and in classical orchestras under the conduction of Leonard Bernstein and Igor Stravinsky.
The production recording and mixing is absolutely phenomenal, a must for jazz, where the smallest sounds of the instruments as well as the subtleties of the playing are paramount not only to the execution of the music but also to the enjoyment of the listener.
