Someone Like You: Cinephiles Movie Review
Someone Like You, based on the novel "Animal Husbandry" by Laura Zigman, attempts to create a comical point of view by having its main character liken male behaviour to animal mating habits.
Someone Like You establishes a funny analogy of men as bulls and women as cows to explain the otherwise "mysterious" inability of men to commit to a single mate.
In spite of the humorous analogy, however, Someone Like You is weakened by the character of Jane "Goodale", which instantly recalls renowned scientist Jane Goodall and her study of chimpanzees.

Someone Like You, by Sarah Dessen
The editing process for Someone Like You was really long and arduous, mostly due to the fact that I always have way more than I need and tend to repeat myself a lot.
I think one of the reasons is that often in high school, as you’re breaking away from your parents a bit, your friends become your family, and you depend on them so much to get you through.
Someone Like You is also special to me because it’s dedicated to my best friend from high school, Bianca, who was there firsthand for all the real truths of us trying to survive high school, and knows even the stories I don’t tell.

 PETULA CLARK: Someone Like You
For international singing star Petula Clark, Someone Like You, is a result of a long-standing ambition, to write and star in an original musical of her own.

A sense of regret surrounds the fate of Someone Like You and it is with respect and gratitude that I dedicate this page to the very talented Petula Clark, Dee Shipman, Kenny Clayton (for their music and lyrics) and to the late Joanne Campbell.

Someone Like You is based on Laura Zigman’s scathing novel, Animal Husbandry, a comic diatribe against the male gender told by a whip-smart woman who’s had her heart shredded one too many times.
Someone Like You has that same weird mixture of intelligence and pandering, wanting to elevate audience expectations yet too often falling into simplistic romantic clichés.
With all its smarts and good intentions, Someone Like You is as blandly predictable as its title, a reassuring and soothing balm for wounds not easily healed.

Someone Like You, I’m happy to say, did not make me rip up my seat and throw it against the screen.
Someone Like You is the story of Jane Goodale (Judd), and how after getting scorched by her whirlwind love affair, starts an anthropomorphic journey to try and explain why men are like bulls in a herd of cows.
You see, after being dumped by her boyfriend, Ray (Greg Kinnear), and loosing her apartment, she is forced to move in with her womanizing co-worker, Eddie (Hugh Jackman).

Someone Like You (2001): Ashley Judd, Hugh Jackman, Greg Kinnear, Marisa Tomei - PopMatters Film Review
Consider Someone Like You, in which heroine Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd) is summarily dumped just before embarking on a live-in relationship.
Notwithstanding the romantic comedy genre's affection for happily-ever-after endings, Someone Like You occasionally testifies to the futility of attempts to recover from or understand Jane's sense of loss.
Although generally sunnier, the movie captures the novel's misery from time to time; when Jane first moves in with Eddie, and discovers that the passage from his apartment to her room is neither a doorway nor a walkway, but a gaping, jagged hole in the wall, framed by splintered wood.

WICKED + SOMEONE LIKE YOU - DVDs
Based on a book called Animal Husbandry, Someone Like You (thanks for the re-title, but could it be more generic?) puts Judd through the paces as Jane Goodale, a talk-show handler whose disastrous fling with co-worker Ray (Greg Kinnear) inspires her to research patterns of male behaviour in the animal kingdom.
During Jane's first time with Ray, there are cutaways to little girls in front of a chalkboard defining words like "lust," yet the established language of the film isn't conducive to fantastic non-sequiturs, nor does director Tony Goldwyn commit to them as a motif thereafter.
And there's a shortage of scenes that actually advance the action, as if the filmmakers knew how overworked their paradigm was and thus spared us the most obvious but also the most integral moments: solid, pre-epilogue indication that Eddie and Jane's feelings for each other have moved out of the platonic realm, for example.

Based on Laura Zigman's successful novel "Animal Husbandry," "Someone Like You" is yet another entry in the rash of contemporary women's comedies that are aggressively smart and sassy and packed with a thousand knowing winks about just how tough it is to be a modern babe in this world.
That must be why, in "Someone Like You," the lead character's theory about the way men, like bulls, are always attracted to "new cows" is explained in detail twice, and then further alluded to until you're fit to bust an udder.
As Tammy Wynette once sang, sometimes it's hard to be a woman -- although not even she had to sit through movies like these.

The latest case-in-point is ""Someone Like You," and like most of its predecessors ("The Marriage Planner," "Heartbreakers"), it's so witless, sit-com shallow and bad in every way that it's just not worthy of much discussion.
Like most failed romantic comedies of the past few years, this one follows the same basic formula.

The new cow/old cow dithering of ''Someone Like You'' is, indeed, the film's idea of a ''Sex and the City'' conceit, but on that infinitely superior show, the anthropomorphic cuteness would have been treated in a few quippy voice overs.
Here, it's the masochistic heart of the movie, complete with illustrative footage of actual cows (not sexy) and a mystery alter ego plot in which Jane, writing under the alias of a white bun haired ''Ph.D.'' named Dr. Marie Charles, channels her theory into a men's magazine where her friend (Marisa Tomei) is an editor.
In ''Someone Like You,'' Judd plays a ''career gal,'' but really, what she does is this: She beams, she broods, she sniffles, she throws a tantrum, she does a high school cheerleader routine.

SPLICEDwire | "Someone Like You" review (2001)
At first glance, "Someone Like You" may look like a formulaic chick flick about a pert, 30-ish career gal (Ashley Judd) who moves in with a womanizing wolf of a co-worker (Hugh Jackman) after being dumped by her boyfriend (Greg Kinnear).
While it's funny and fresh, from the very beginning "Someone Like You" has its nagging problems -- like the fact that Judd is a bloody awful narrator.
He sees past the flaws in "Someone Like You," he knows where to find the humor, and he lets the convincingly complicated and fully realized characters speak for themselves.

The generically-titled "Someone Like You," which was originally to be called "Animal Husbandry," based on the novel of the same name by Laura Zigman, is thankfully far from generic when it comes to how much it manages to stand out from the majority of romantic comedies made today.
While most romances come off as if they have been processed by a computer, "Someone Like You" is more reality-based, as it stands as a delicate, involving character study of a woman who gradually finds solace in her own skin, and realizes she can be happy with or without a steady guy.
The tale of a woman who, through the trials and tribulations of a failed romance and a possibly invigorating new one, finds her place in the world, it is a worthwhile movie that will likely exceed most people's wildest expectations on just how good something called "Someone Like You" could possibly be.
