Someone Like You: Cinephiles Movie Review
Someone Like You, based on the novel "Animal Husbandry" by Laura Zigman, attempts to create a comical point of view by having its main character liken male behaviour to animal mating habits.
Someone Like You establishes a funny analogy of men as bulls and women as cows to explain the otherwise "mysterious" inability of men to commit to a single mate.
In spite of the humorous analogy, however, Someone Like You is weakened by the character of Jane "Goodale", which instantly recalls renowned scientist Jane Goodall and her study of chimpanzees.

Throughout the movie there are title cards that hint, or tell, in what stage the main character or the movie is in.
Someone Like You is the story of Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd), a TV show booker.
Overall, Someone Like You is the type of romantic drama to throw in the middle of Spring, hoping it will interest a target audience of mostly women who can relate and interpret the main character's views on male behavior.

 Someone Like You (2001): Reviews
As a movie, it knows little about men, women or television shows, but has studied movie formulas so carefully that we can see each new twist and turn as it creeps ever so slowly into view.
I loved this movie, it was a funny and romantic comedy with a great story and had solid support from great actors and actresses.
Haha, not exactly what the movie is all about, but that's what drew me to the movie at first.

Someone Like You is one of those bubbly, frothy (hmm, how many adjectives for enjoyable can I throw in here?), charming (ok, that's enough) romantic comedies that doesn't get made too much these days.

Someone Like You could probably be charitably characterized as "cute", but there's such a lack of direction and energy that it could also be described as "sleep inducing".
Someone Like You is so concerned with trivial issues and secondary relationships that it loses sight of the main couple.
Like all movies of the genre, success or failure depends far more on casting than on plot or direction.

Someone Like You (2001) Starring: Ashley Judd, Greg Kinnear, Hugh Jackman - Three Movie Buffs Review
If it seems like a weak plot, that's only because it is. In fact this movie almost tries to be the Seinfeld of Love Stories, relying on conversation between the characters, rather than plot points, to move the story forward.
Go and see it with someone you love, and if you find your date is attracted to Hugh Jackman, don't worry, Ashley Judd does a cheerleading routine in panties and a tank top that will more than make up for it.
Even Ashley's speech at the end of the movie, where she retracts all she has thought to be correct comes off sounding unsupported.

Someone Like You Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
"Someone Like You" is the cinematic adaptation of Laura Zigman's best-selling novel "Animal Husbandry".
"Someone Like You" follows the travails of Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd of "Double Jeopardy"), the talent booker for a New York-based talk show hosted by Diane Roberts (Ellen Barkin of "Drop Dead Gorgeous").
"Someone Like You" starts off interestingly enough, as Judd's voiceover explains the basis for her theory, and a number of title placards identify the steps of her infatuation and eventual disillusionment with Ray.

Movie Review: Someone Like You / Mountain Xpress / Asheville, NC
At that, Someone Like You manages to get by a good deal of the time on the strength of the characterizations, a degree of wit, competent (though not very exciting) direction by Tony Goldwyn, and the likable and believable playing of Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman.
What is particularly unfortunate is that Someone Like You has the seeds for something truly fresh, funny and pertinent but they are never allowed to sprout.
The premise is certainly sound and unusual: when Ashley Judd is unceremoniously dumped by boyfriend Greg Kinnear, she hits upon the theory that men and woman are like bulls and cows and that once a man has a woman she becomes "old cow" and therefore no longer desirable.

Someone Like You Review :: Hollywood.com
Dumped, sad, and homeless, Jane spends much of the rest of the movie either crying her eyes out (Judd does cry very prettily) to best friend Liz (Marisa Tomei) and co-worker-turned-new-roommate Eddie Alden (Hugh Jackman), or ranting uncontrollably against the failings of the male animal.
This is her movie without a doubt, but her unfortunate tendency to turn true comedy into melodrama swiftly grows cloying.
Someone Like You clearly tries to go beyond the typical romantic comedy but its failure to do so is all the more painful to watch.

“Someone Like You” follows around Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd), a young talent booker who works for a sassy weekday talk show called “Diane Roberts: Live”.
Hugh Jackman, as the second male lead, shows that even in a bad movie he still is showing North American audiences that he is here to stay.
Aside from alienation, “Someone Like You” has some moments that really help define the male-female relationship and it is hilarious what Judd actually comes up with to address the stereo-typical Hollywood romance gone awry.

Someone Like You | movies : ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
The new cow/old cow dithering of ''Someone Like You'' is, indeed, the film's idea of a ''Sex and the City'' conceit, but on that infinitely superior show, the anthropomorphic cuteness would have been treated in a few quippy voice overs.
Here, it's the masochistic heart of the movie, complete with illustrative footage of actual cows (not sexy) and a mystery alter ego plot in which Jane, writing under the alias of a white bun haired ''Ph.D.'' named Dr. Marie Charles, channels her theory into a men's magazine where her friend (Marisa Tomei) is an editor.
In ''Someone Like You,'' Judd plays a ''career gal,'' but really, what she does is this: She beams, she broods, she sniffles, she throws a tantrum, she does a high school cheerleader routine.

 Someone Like You
When the annals of male bashing movies are being compiled years from now, they should remember to include “Someone Like You,” an annoyingly thin and unoriginal picture.
After her relationship with Ray goes south, Jane is forced to move in with office Lothario Eddie (hunk-of-the-month Jackman, last seen in X-Men), the one man she could never in a million years fall for, which means, naturally, that he is exactly the one she does fall for.
Sorry, no. At the end of the picture we hear the Van Morrison classic from which the movie takes its name, but all that does is make us wish that the filmmakers had managed to extract one tenth of the heart and soul of that song for their movie.

Though the movie's plot loosely follows the book, "Someone Like You" takes the joy and whimsy out of "Animal Husbandry." The characters seem diluted, their lives less vivid.
The character of Ray was less of a jerk, Eddie seemed less of a womanizer and Jane appeared less obsessed with discovering the meaning behind her breakup.
Judd dove into her performance as Jane, making the movie as watchable as it is. The other actors seemed lost or wooden by comparison.

With the release of Someone Like You, the newest bovine disorder to be on pop culturalists’ lips will be the New Cow/Old Cow Theory.
Simply put, men are not pigs; rather, they are more like bulls, for after first mating with a new cow, they never mate with her again, instead moving on to a newer cow, until it too becomes old, and the cycle repeats itself.
Although the plot is pure cookie-cutter romantic comedy, at least for the most part, it’s a diverting cookie-cutter movie that features an attractive cast and locale, as the movie is entirely filmed in the streets of New York City.
