Somerfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Somerfield is a chain of small to medium-sized supermarkets operating in the United Kingdom.
Somerfield was subject to takeover speculation from 2003 onwards, a substantial part of the group's appeal to bidders lying in the value of its property portfolio rather than its trading operations, as this offered the potential to leverage its financing after a takeover.
Somerfield plc was acquired by the consortium consisting of Apax Partners Worldwide LLP, Barclays Capital and the Tchenguiz Family Trust with effect from 21 December 2005, when the name of the group changed to Somerfield Ltd.

The Observer | Business | Somerfield gives up on ethics
Somerfield, which has about 800 stores in Britain, was bought last December for £1.1bn by the Tchenguiz-led consortium.
The Ethical Trading Initiative said: 'Somerfield informed us that the decision was taken after the company entered private ownership on 21 December, which prompted them to reconsider their short- and medium-term business priorities.
Somerfield's decision comes as a report written by the Future Laboratory, a branding consultancy, and commissioned by American Express, shows that a third of UK shoppers now regard themselves as 'conscious consumers', who, says the survey, 'have faith in themselves to be an agent of change'.

Somerfield next on the takeover list?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Somerfield, which is the smallest of the leading nationwide food retailers in the UK, has been struggling for many years to keep pace with its larger rivals, and in particular has taken years to recover from the ill-fated acquisition of the discount food retailer Kwik Save.
Somerfield has around 1,400 stores, most of which are medium sized, and is not thought likely to attract the same level of trade interest as Safeway — although a piecemeal acquisition of some of the company's stores could interest the other supermarket operators if that became necessary as part of a takeover.
Somerfield did not give a reaction to the bid, but said simply that “the proposal is subject to a number of conditions and it is uncertain whether an offer will ultimately be made”.

Somerfield said that it welcomed the clarification from Springwater, whose bid for the chain also involved selling a number of outlets to the Sainsbury's group.
But Somerfield's board added that it was concerned by Sainsbury's decision to file a merger notice with the Office of Fair Trading regarding clearance to acquire Somerfield 171 stores — outlets which the company has not agreed to sell.
Somerfield appears to have ridden out the current storm, but as it continues to strengthen its position it will inevitably be all the more coveted by the larger players- certainly once the long-running Safeway takeover saga is over.

Somerfield stops email flood with archiving - Computing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
With 1,255 stores around the country and a staff of 54,000, the retailer needed a system to manage email storage, especially with the growing legal requirements on how long emails must be retained in case they ever need to be presented as evidence in court.
By using individual vaults instead of the storage-hungry PST file option offered by Microsoft Outlook, the system will be able to hold files in a central repository in their original form, but compressed and secured so that only the company can delete them.
Somerfield corporate cost audit controller, Colin Clarke, said the retailer wanted to do more than just throw additional disk space at the problem of storing all the emails for its 3,500 Microsoft Exchange users.

 Somerfield rejects Baugur bid
But Somerfield last week rejected the possible bid, saying that the various pre-conditions imposed by the Icelandic group were unacceptable and that there was “no certainty that the proposal would deliver a formal offer to shareholders at an appropriate level”.
Indeed, Sainsbury has already made an offer for Somerfield — back in June 2003 — which was rejected both by the Somerfield board and the competition authorities, a move which flagged up the growing level of interest in a newly resurgent Somerfield (and the problems likely to face any bid from a major supermarket group).
Both chains have prime high street locations for their stores, but their trading positions are radically different, and both have spent large amounts of cash on revamping stores in recent years, making them unlikely to want to go through the whole process again.
