Somerleyton is a village by the River Waveney in north-eastern Suffolk, England within The Broads National Park.
The village once belonged to the Somerleyton Estate, formerly the property of Morton Peto.
Somerleyton Hall is still a private residence, and is open to the public.

Somerleyton Station is the most northerly railway station in Suffolk and is served by the Lowestoft to Norwich Wherry Line.
The station building was built some time after the opening of the railway in 1847 and is constructed in mock Elizabethan style similar to other buildings in the village.

The man responsible for rebuilding Somerleyton was a fascinating character, who rose from the position of apprentice builder to become head of an international construction empire responsible for building railways in Denmark, Canada, the Argentine, Russia, and his native Britain.
In 1863 Somerleyton was sold to Sir Francis Crossley to pay off Peto's rising debts, and the Crossley family holds the estate to this day.
Though evergreens are not uncommon today, Somerleyton was one of the first houses to feature the conifers when they were first introduced to Britain in the 17th century.

Somerleyton Hall, built in 1845, is the stately home of Lord and Lady Somerleyton.
The house was preceded by a Jacobean Hall, built in the mid 17th century by the Wentworth family.
The crumbling tower disrupted tradition when, in 1998, Lord and Lady Somerleyton were told their third daughter, Alicia Crossley, would not be able to marry there amid fears that guests could be in danger from falling masonry.

The present Somerleyton hall was built between 1844-1851 by Sir Morton Peto a self made entrepreneur who was also responsible for the building of the harbour and esplanade at Lowestoft.
No expense was spared in the transformation of the House and gardens but by 1861 Sir Morton was in serious financial difficulties and was forced to put the entire estate up for sale.
It was bought by Sir Francis Crossley a carpet manufacturer from Halifax and great grandfather of the present Lord Somerleyton.

The present Lord Somerleyton is a descendant of that family, though I don't know if carpet manufacture still contributes to his fortune or whether the house and grounds are his only source of income now.

The church stands within the grounds, though just out of sight, of Somerleyton Hall, a Tudor great house totally transformed in sumptuous if incomprehensible style by architect John Thomas for railway tycoon Sir Morton Peto in 1844.
Ten years later Peto also had Thomas rebuild the church, which he did with a restraint notably lacking in his work at the house.
This screen is worth a trip to see: nothing else here really is, though Somerleyton is, inside at least, one of our lovelier pieces of Victoriana.
