At a Monday meeting of the Town Council, Town Manager Scott Shanley said the helicopter landing at Fermi was a violation of the town's zoning ordinances, and that steps have been taken to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
The town took the grower to court in 2001 after residents close to the tobacco fields said they were afraid that the spraying of fungicides from helicopters would put their health at risk.
Town officials argued local zoning rules prevent Enfield Shade from running a heliport on its property without permission from the town.

The town was named as a tribute to Captain Richard Somers, a young naval officer from New Jersey who lost his life in the Tripolitan War.
In the early 19th century, Somers, or as it was then generally known as Somerstown Plains, contained hat factories, carriage factories, three hotels, two general stores, an iron mine, a milk factory, and a sanctuary for boys operated by the Christian Brothers.
It was in 1927 that the Town of Somers purchased the hotel from the Bailey family.

SOMERS -- After more than a decade of debating the intricacies of its water service, the Enfield-based Hazardville Water Co. is suing the town for about $21,600 in what it claims are unpaid fire hydrant and maintenance charges.
Somers also has a separate agreement with Hazardville Water Co. to provide water to the Somersville section of town for fire protection.
However, Somers has contested its portion of nonroutine maintenance charges in recent years, Jacobs added, because town officials believe the water company is charging too much in the maintenance fees to Somers.

Most land is an incorporated town or city, so this annexation stuff is a little strange, but it makes sense for a city to control growth on its boundaries and to more efficiently provide services to periurban residents.
We are also amending another agreement that we have with the Town of Somers, which is generally north of the City, but does include town corridors that impact part of the west and northwest parts of the City.
Somers will stay a township for the time being...only parts off the town would be attached to the City over a 30 year time period in order to square of boundaries and to prevent inefficient services.
