Interstate 480 was a double-decker freeway that parallelled the Embarcadero in San Francisco.
Despised by San Franciscans because they felt it had destroyed their city, the freeway was damaged when a major earthquake shook the Bay Area in 1989.
In the following years, the freeway was rebuilt so that the decks carrying its northbound and southbound lanes were built at the same level (the double-decker freeway no longer exists).

There is a gap in Interstate 95 in New Jersey, where local opposition groups managed to stop construction of the Somerset Freeway through the area.
This situation is scheduled to be fixed sometime in the 2010s when a new interchange is to be built, and I-95 re-routed north of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Extension to the New Jersey Turnpike.

In 1969, in response to the re-extending of the original Somerset Freeway (I-95) plans back into Middlesex County, a new 'connector' was planned between the Somerset Freeway (I-95) and the Middlesex Freeway (I-287) near the former proposed junction of the two roads at current Middlesex Freeway (I-287) Exit 10.
This new freeway was likely planned to serve Trenton-bound traffic which had travelled down the Somerset Freeway (I-95), and thus would've functioned as an extension of the Somerset Freeway (I-95) into downtown Trenton.
However, it is interesting in that the junction between the Somerset Freeway (I-95) and the Middlesex Freeway (I-287) was planned to occur almost on top of existing Exit 4, with perhaps the elimination of the exit or extensive modifications planned.

The I-695 spur, known unofficially as the Somerset Freeway Extension, was approved by the BPR in October 1968.
