The programs were sponsored/owned by a soap manufacturer and featured products geared towards the female listening audience who escaped the drudgery of cooking, washboards and their intolerable family lives by listening to such soap favorites as MA PERKINS, a radio serial program sponsored by Oxydol soap powder and aired nationally.
The prime-time series DYNASTY was the first soap opera to feature a former president (Gerald Ford) and Secretary of State (Henry Kissinger) playing on screen roles.
Traditionally soaps to that time catered to the 35 or older crowd and had just used younger actors as props to be seen at parties and poolsides.

Also, it was one of three soaps, along with The Best of Everything and A World Apart, that premiered on March 30, 1970, marking the last time more than one new daytime soap ever premiered on the same day.
Somerset ceased to be known as Another World in Somerset by March 1971, but the AW wreath of interlocking circles logo continued to be used until the 1974/75 season.
Note: This may be the same as Chet Kingsbury's "Somerset Theme." As I remember, the Charles/Dina Paul Somerset theme music was certainly in use by no later than the Fall of 1974, but NBC press releases credited Chet Kingsbury with the show's music until as late as 1976.

Somerset (sometimes called Another World: Somerset) was a soap opera which ran on NBC from March 30, 1970 until December 31, 1976.
In 1972, the show moved away from the traditional soap format, and started telling stories that dealt heavily with the Mafia and other types of crime, not unlike rival soap opera The Edge of Night.
The show continued for four more years, but the ratings were never as high as sister soap Another World, and the show was canceled late in 1976.
