Mary Fairfax Somerville was one the most important scientists of the nineteenth century.
His estate was sufficient to allow Mary to live comfortably, and to continue her studies, which had progressed to Isaac Newtons's Principia, at the time considered cutting edge, and advanced Astronomy.
She was a strong supporter for the education and enfranchisement of women and mentored many younger scientists including Ada Lovelace, who was to make such a notable contribution to computing.

It was founded (as Somerville Hall) in 1879 to provide an opportunity for women, who at that date were excluded from membership of the University, to gain some kind of higher education in Oxford.

Mary Fairfax Somerville was born on December 26, 1780 in Jedburgh Scotland, the daughter of Margaret Charters and Lieutenant William George Fairfax, a vice admiral in the British Navy (Osen 96).
Dr. Somerville was very supportive of his wife's intellectual endeavors, despite the fact that some of his family wished that Mary would "give up her foolish manner of like and make a respectable and useful wife" (Osen 104).
Although deaf and frail in her later years, she retained her mental faculties and even continued to, in her words, "read books on the higher algebra for four or five hours in the morning, and even to solve problems" until her peaceful death at the age of ninety two (Perl 92).

Though they may be gone, a Tufts anthropology professor is leading a unique project to make sure the local theaters won't be forgotten.
Working with the Somerville Museum, Tufts' David Guss has been documenting the rise and eventual decline of the city's vibrant theater culture for an upcoming exhibit called "The Lost Theaters of Somerville," reported the Boston Globe.
With grants from Somerville, Tufts and the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, all of the ideas may soon become a reality.

Shape Up Somerville staff serve on several different community coalitions that are working creatively toward sustaining the different interventions, as well as working to bring in more funding to support health initiatives.
All Somerville school nurses have been formally trained to collect height and weight on elementary school students each year, as well as how to approach and counsel families who have a child identified as at risk of or overweight.
According to the 2003 Shape Up Somerville project data, 46% of Somerville’s 1st–3rd grade population are at risk of overweight or are overweight; childhood obesity has serious negative health outcomes for the children in Somerville and the entire Somerville community.
